Completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2019 by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS/UP), MSc in Marine Sciences with specialization in Marine Biology and Ecology in 2011, and graduate degree in Aquatic Sciences in 2009 by the University of Porto. Is a researcher of the Iron & Innate Immunity group at the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, University of Porto (i3S/UP), hired on a competitive basis through the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus - 6th Edition developed by FCT, with the individual project "Myxosporea meet genomics - studying key aspects of host recognition, invasion and immune response". Since 2019, is also an invited assistant professor at ICBAS/UP for the disciplines of Cellular Structure and Function, Protists, Health and Pathology of Aquatic Animals of the BSc in Aquatic Sciences, and for the disciplines of Aquatic Animal Pathology and Sanitary Safety, and Marine Phytoplankton and Zooplankton for the MSc degree in Marine Sciences. Is co-regent of the disciplines of Cellular Structure and Function, Protists, and Marine Phytoplankton and Zooplankton. Participated as student fellow and researcher in competitive financed projects, and is presently the Principal Investigator to an FCT funded project seeking to obtain a better understanding of myxosporean-host interactions, with focus on the genomics and transcriptomics of fish host recognition and invasion. Has published over 50 original peer reviewed research articles and 2 book chapters. Has supervised three MSc students, and several BSc projects and professional internships. Frequently collaborates with both national and international entities, having interacted with over 35 collaborators with co-authorships in scientific papers. Her research interests are mainly focused in the systematics, biology, ecology, pathogenicity, evolution and phylogeny of parasites belonging to the phyla Myxozoa, Microsporidia and Apicomplexa.
