Joana Ferreira (JF) completed a BSc degree in Biochemistry, and a MSc degree in Health Sciences, both at University of Minho. During her MSc, JF learned about different research topics, including oncology, neuroscience, immunology, genetics, biostatistics, and bioempreendedorism. She has had the opportunity to enroll in a laboratory animal sciences course, which accredited her to work with different animal models in the context of research. During her MSc dissertation project, Deciphering WNT6-driven mechanism of chemotherapy resistance in human glioblastoma, under the supervision of Dr. Céline S. Gonçalves and Dr. Bruno M. Costa, at ICVS, JF explored the association of WNT6 expression with decreased glioblastoma sensitivity to the gold-standard chemotherapeutic, temozolomide, and sought to unravel potential WNT6-driven molecular mechanisms which potentiated glioblastoma aggressiveness and chemoresistance. Throughout this time, JF was able to develop a multimodal skillset, in in vitro functional and molecular assays, as well as in subcutaneous and orthotopic intracranial in vivo glioblastoma models. Currently, JF is a fellowship researcher in the project Multi-Omic NETworks in gliomas, seeking to explore the biomarker potential of novel candidate molecules selected through previous bioinformatic analyses. JF has participated in 6 scientific meetings, having contributed with 2 oral presentations (1 as co-first author) and 7 poster presentations (4 as co-first author). These communications were distinguished through 2 best oral and 1 best poster presentations.
