Ana Pamplona obtained a 5-year degree in Biochemistry (FC, UL) in 1996 and completed her PhD in Biochemistry in the scientific domain of Biochemistry Physics (FCT/UNL) in 2003. During her postdoctoral training, Ana Pamplona shifted her research field to understand host-parasite interactions during Plasmodium infection. Ana Pamplona was then hired under FCT’s Ciência 2008 program in the Bruno Silva-Santos's Lab at IMM. A. Pamplona is a senior researcher in Bruno Silva-Santos's Lab at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular with a fixed contract. For the last few years, Ana Pamplona has been working on host-pathogen interactions in the context of malaria infection to understand the critical host effector immune cells, particularly gamma-delta T cells, and the immune and metabolic pathways needed for protective immune responses to Plasmodium infection, as well as implicated in the development of malaria-associated pathologies. During these past years, A. Pamplona’s main research goal was to understand to what extent and how the liver stage of Plasmodium infection predetermines the pathological syndrome cerebral malaria, which arises during the blood-stage infection. The working hypothesis is that the innate immune responses and metabolic functions of the Plasmodium-infected liver generated during the pre-erythrocytic stage, i.e., sporozoite and liver stages, shape the immune responses of the subsequent blood-stage infection, particularly the development of inflammation-associated severe malaria (such as ECM). This research area remains largely unexplored. This work culminated with a publication in PNAS and a review in FEBS journal. A. Pamplona has been making significant contributions to the malaria research field, both as a postdoctoral fellow and an independent researcher under FCT’s Ciência 2008 program. A. Pamplona contributed to the identification of host factors, heme oxygenase-1 and vascular endothelial factor, critical for the development of severe malaria and to a better understanding of the potential role of gamma-delta T cells in malaria pathogenesis. These studies have been published in high-impact journals. For the past years, A. Pamplona has supervised master’s students, postdoctoral fellows (one of which was funded by EMBO), MSc researchers, and tutored PhD students. Moreover, A. Pamplona has obtained funding as a principal investigator in FCT calls (total 273 thousand euros) and has been published as a corresponding senior author in international peer-reviewed journals. As a scientific reviewer and evaluator, A. Pamplona reviewed bilateral projects within the scope of FCT’s International Scientific Cooperation Agreements. She acted as an invited scientific reviewer for indexed journals and collaborated in outreach activities. Ana Pamplona was invited to be an Editor for Frontiers in Immunology in the section of Parasite Immunology. I was involved in the COVID-19 thematic network (COVIRed) Transnational Cooperation-Ibero-American Science and Technology Program for Development (CYTED)-FCT. As a member of the Committee of Health of CYTED, I have the responsibility to propose new lines of research for each call as well as perform the evaluation and follow-up of the actions (from June 2022 to present). Recently, A. Pamplona has been involved in research projects that aim to characterize the mRNA transcriptomes and the expression and function of miRNAs of IL-17- and IFN-g-producing gamma-delta T cell subsets present at equilibrium states established before (naïve mice) and after infection in particular malaria.
