Manuel Fernando R. Pereira is Full Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP), since 2020. He obtained his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from FEUP in 1994. From 1994 to 1998 he carried out post-graduate research on carbon as a catalyst at FEUP, under the supervision of J.L. Figueiredo. In 1998 he obtained the PhD from the University of Porto. Between 1998 and 2000 he moved to CITEVE - Technological Centre for the Textile and Clothing Industries of Portugal, where he worked as R&D manager. In 2000 he returned to FEUP as an assistant professor and joined the Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LCM), member of the LSRE-LCM. He is the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department since 2018, coordinator of the LCM from 2020, former director of the Integrated Master in Environmental Engineering at FEUP from 2013-2019, elected Member of the National College of Chemical and Biological Engineering of the Portuguese Engineers Association from 2013-2022, President of the Carbon Group of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ) since 2021, representative of Portugal in the International Association of the Catalysis Communities (IACS) Council since 2018 and in the European Carbon Association since 2019. He was awarded the "Medalha Vicente Seabra" in 2008 by SPQ, and "Prémio de Excelência Científica" in 2013 and 2018 by FEUP. His main research interests are heterogeneous catalysis, carbon materials, environment and energy, biomass Conversion, chemical Reaction engineering, functional materials and smart textiles. In these areas, he has supervised 25 PhD (19 concluded), 99 master students and 11 postdoctoral researchers; participated in 12 international and 37 national projects, 27 out of which as PI at FEUP and 3 as co-PI; published 381 scientific papers, nº of citations is 23947, and the H-index is 79 (Scopus, 1/2024), 13 book chapters, more than 450 presentations in scientific meetings and 6 patents pending. He has international collaborations with 23 research groups from 12 countries.
