I earned my degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Porto, followed by PhD training in molecular medicine and computational biology at Harvard University and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research (USA). My research focused on biomolecule engineering to develop FRET-biosensors, enabling a deeper understanding of the dynamic behavior of cellular systems in vivo. Additionally, I worked on computational models to predict and experimentally validate intra- and intermolecular dynamic interactions critical for complex cellular processes such as cell division. Over a decade ago, I established an independent research program at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Portugal, dedicated to developing analytical biosensor technologies and computational tools to identify molecular signatures associated with the transition from health to disease. Currently, I am an Associate Researcher at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, University of Porto (i3S – Host Institution) and the acting Principal Investigator of the Molecular and Analytical Medicine Laboratory, an i3S-affiliated lab at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP). In this role, I lead a multidisciplinary team specializing in biomedical engineering, analytical chemistry, and computational modeling. My current research at i3S focuses on developing advanced molecular biosensing technologies for high-throughput and point-of-care applications, with a strong emphasis on clinical validation. Since earning my PhD in 2012, I have secured four patents and published 43 research articles, with 50% as the corresponding author, in high-impact Q1 journals, including Biosensors and Bioelectronics, ACS Sensors, Lab on a Chip, Advanced Materials Technologies, JCR, ACS Analytical Chemistry, PNAS, eLife, Developmental Cell, Cell Reports, Glia, Journal of Cell Biology, ACS Chemical Neuroscience, and Nature Scientific Food. I also have two original research manuscripts under revision, seven conference papers, and four book chapters. My work has been recognized internationally, with invitations to present at ten major scientific meetings, including the 2024 Aptamers Conference in Oxford, UK, and Biosensors 2023 – 34th Anniversary World Congress on Biosensors in South Korea. As of February 2025, my publications have received 1,326 citations, with an h-index of 19 and an i10-index of 26. Beyond my research contributions, I have a strong track record in mentoring, having supervised six postdoctoral fellows, seven PhD candidates, 14 MSc students, two undergraduate students, and one medical research fellow. Additionally, I have successfully secured funding as Principal Investigator or core member for 17 projects, supported by prestigious organizations such as the European Commission, La Caixa Foundation, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and the pharmaceutical industry.
