I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Beira Interior in Portugal in 2005. Subsequently, I received a 30-month pre-doctoral fellowship (POCI/SAU-NEU/55380/2004) in 2006, focusing on molecular and cell biology, with some of the research integrated into my 2008 Master's thesis in Biochemistry. In 2014, I defended my PhD in Neurosciences at the Netherlands Institute for Neurosciences (NIN) in Amsterdam. Afterward, I moved to Erasmus University Medical Centre (EMC) in Rotterdam, where I undertook a post-doctoral position in Dr. Erik Lubberts Lab, collaborating with Prof. Björn Claussen, gaining expertise in immunology. Returning to retinal research in 2016, I joined Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in Leiden, Netherlands. Here, I focused on characterizing CRB1-rodent models, CRB1-patient induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) retinal organoids, and AAV-mediated gene therapies for CRB1-hereditary retinopathies. In 2019, I secured a junior researcher position through the Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus - 2017 (CEEC2017-IND) at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) in Portugal. In 2023, I attained an assistant researcher position through the Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus - 5th edition, followed by a fixed-term contract as an Assistant Researcher at the University of Coimbra later in the same year. My prolific publication record includes 31 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 1 editorial, and 4 book chapters. As of October 2024, these works have garnered over 1175 citations, resulting in an h-index of 18 on Scopus. Noteworthy publications include contributions to high-impact factor journals in Ophthalmology, Human Genetics, Stem Cells, and Neurosciences. Beyond publications, I presented my work at international congresses, delivered presentations at national and international meetings, and received four international travel grants. In 2016, I received the Donders prize for the best PhD thesis in ophthalmology in the Netherlands and the Antioxidants 2020 Outstanding Review Award. I actively contribute to the academic community as a reviewer for esteemed journals, including Autophagy, Transl Neurodegener, and PLoS ONE. I served as a guest editor for a special issue in Antioxidants and am a member of the Antioxidants (MDPI) reviewer board. My commitment to research is evident in securing approximately €947k in competitive funding, serving as the Principal Investigator for €75k and Co-Principal Investigator for €876k. Additionally, I contributed approximately €520k as human resources to various research initiatives. I played a pivotal role in mentoring, supervising 2 MSc students, guiding 14 undergraduate trainees, and lecturing in postgraduate courses at the University of Coimbra. In 2021, I founded the CRB1.Portugal network, dedicated to identifying Portuguese CRB1-patients and raising awareness about genetic retinopathies. I actively participate in science communication, engaging in events such as World Sight Day, European Researchers Night, and Brain Awareness Week.
