Sandra Cruz has a PhD in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology from the University of Aveiro (2014), as well as a degree in Industrial Chemistry and a Master's in Advanced Chemistry from the University of Coimbra. She is currently a Researcher at IPN, where she leads national and international projects that focus on developing thin films for antimicrobial and anti-wear applications, H2 production, and battery electrodes. Her responsibilities include project planning, management, and materials characterization using advanced techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray fluorescence. Sandra's expertise lies in thin film deposition through sputtering, which she consistently applies with a safety-by-design approach and sustainability as the ultimate goal. Sandra has collaborated with esteemed research centers, including CCC, CICECO, CESAM, and TEMA, and presently with CEMMPRE. During her doctoral program, she specialized in Materials Engineering, Chemistry, and Nanosciences, with her thesis centring on synthesizing and characterizing graphene-based nanocomposites, emphasizing paper surface functionalization. With a diverse career, Sandra has engaged in various research areas, including nanoparticle synthesis, organic, computational, polymer and analytical chemistry, and materials engineering. Sandra managed the Portuguese partner in the GreenCoat project and is currently the Principal Investigator for the ActiveCATh project. Continuing her commitment to professional development, she recently participated in the 2nd Materials for Energy Transition Summer School, focusing on battery technologies. Sandra has an impressive publication record, with 24 articles in ISI international journals, 3 book chapters, and over 650 citations, resulting in an H index of 14 (Google Scholar). Actively involved in academic supervision, she co-supervised MSc students, and serves on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals, including those published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Elsevier, and MDPI. She is also the Guest Editor of two special volumes published in the Processes and Polymers (MDPI) journals.
