My curricular path in evolutionary biology started with a graduation with a bachelor's degree in Cell and Molecular Biology (2009, New University of Lisbon- Faculty of Sciences and Technology), followed by a MSc in Applied Microbiology (University of Lisbon-Faculty of Sciences, 2011). During this period, I started working with yeasts with a strong emphasis on ecology, phylogenetics and population genetics of Saccharomyces species. After completing my masters, I worked as a research fellow (PTDC/AGR-ALI/112802/2009) at New University of Lisbon- Faculty of Sciences and Technology) for two years. The project was focused on improving fructose fermentation in wine yeasts; I acquired skills in a multitude of different techniques from biochemical analyses to yeasts¿ genetic engineering, while strengthening my skills on bioinformatics and phylogenetics. From 2011 to 2014 (when I started my PhD) I co-authored 3 papers published in high impact journals (PNAS, Nature Communications and Plos Genetics). In 2018 I completed a PhD in Biology from New University of Lisbon- Faculty of Sciences and Technology, in parnership with the University of Wisconsin Madison. During my PhD I unveiled important aspects of metabolism in yeasts using an interdisciplinary approach and solidifying my skills on comparative genomics, phylogenetics, biochemistry and genetics. This allowed me to make important discoveries such as the high prevalence of horizontal gene transfer events that were completely unknown and thought to occur extremely rarely in eukaryotes. During my stay in the laboratory of Dr Christopher Hittinger (University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin), funded by FCT as part of my PhD fellowship, I fostered a fruitful collaboration with Dr Antonis Rokas (Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee). From my PhD, two papers in high impact journals were published (MBE in 2015 and eLife in 2018), one of which in co-authorship with the American collaborators. In January 2019 I started a postdoc in the Yeast Genomics lab (https://www.crem.fct.unl.pt/Yeast_Genomics_Lab/) where I continued working on the elucidation of the role of HGT-derived genes in yeasts' metabolism from an evolutionary standpoint but also with a biotechnological perspective. From January 2019 I published 3 more papers on this subject, the last one in PNAS (Gonçalves&Gonçalves, 2019). From 2014 I (co)-mentored 17 BSc and MSc students, and several rotation students. In 2021 I started co-supervising a PhD student in collaboration with Dr Sérgio Filipe (UCIBIO, https://www.requimte.pt/ucibio/research-groups/molecular-microbiology-genomics). I also participated in teaching duties (practical sessions in Regulation of genetic expression of the MSc course in Molecular genetics and biomedicine FCT-NOVA). I was also awarded with a PhD fellowship award from FCT (2013), 2 travel grants to attend scientific meetings abroad (2013, 2017), 2 best presentation Prizes in international conferences (2015, 2017), and 2 research grants for a short term project in the USA (2020, currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic). I also participated as a reviewer in 3 peer review processes in different journals (2019-2020).
