Gabriel Silva obtained his Ph.D. in 2018 from the University of Lisbon, with a thesis titled ‘Inueni, germana, uiam: Studies on Magic in Vergil’s Aeneid 4 and in Latin Literature’. Currently, he holds a position of Invited Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Centre for Classical Studies at the same university. His research interests encompass Latin poetry (bucolism, elegy, and epic), ancient magic, and ancient/Renaissance medicine. Following the completion of his doctoral degree, Silva secured a research position in a funded project titled ‘Gynecia: Rodericus a Castro Lusitanus and the ancient medical tradition about gynaecology and embryology’, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Within the framework of this project, Silva further developed his interests in ancient/Renaissance medicine, leading to the publication of articles in high-impact journals. Subsequently, after the conclusion of his research position, he was invited to serve as an Assistant Professor at the School of Arts and Humanities. His recent publications include journal articles such as “Magic and Memory: Dido’s Ritual for Inducing Forgetfulness in Aeneid 4” (Mnemosyne 74.6), “Erichtho the Doctor? Medical Observations on Lucan’s Necromantic Episode” (Classical Quarterly 73.2, forthcoming), and “An Unnoticed Telestich in Vergil (Aeneid 8.246-9)?” (Classical Quarterly 74, forthcoming).
