Pedro Alves has a MSc in Bioengineering - Molecular Biotechnology from FEUP. Pedro is currently a PhD student in the Doctoral Programme in Biomedical Engineering (PRODEB) at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and is working on covalent conjugation of antimicrobial peptides onto polysaccharides to develop novel biomaterials to fight infection in skin chronic wounds. The work is being developed at i3S, in Porto, Portugal, at BioEngineered Surfaces group, under the supervision of Dr Cristina Martins. Pedro has co-authored 4 scientific publications in Q1 international publications (mean IF: 6.67, with a total of 28 citations) and presented his work at 21 scientific conferences: 13 oral (8 International / 5 National) and 9 poster communications (4 International / 5 National). He has received 6 awards for best oral communication. During his MSc, Pedro was a research trainee in Dr Claudio Sunkel's lab at i3S , where he had the opportunity to help in a project of characterising a protein involved in the metaphase-to-anaphase transition during mitosis. Afterwards, he was part of the Ladame group at Imperial College London, UK for a 5-month traineeship under the ERASMUS+ exchange programme, where he worked towards the development of a reliable and affordable portable device for the detection of prostate cancer biomarkers. Later on, Pedro worked on his Master Thesis under the supervision of Dr Cristina Barrias were he focused on the development of a high-throughput cell-in-gel platform for the analysis of cell behaviour in 3D matrices.
