Susana Palma is a Senior Researcher at Unidade de Ciências Biomoleculares Aplicadas (UCIBIO), School of Science and Technology at NOVA University of Lisbon (Lisbon, Portugal), within the Biomolecular Engineering Group, led by Porfessor Cecília Roque. She holds a MSc in Biomedical Engineering (IST-UL, 2007) and a PhD in Bioengineering Systems (MIT-Portugal, NOVA FCT, 2015). Her interdisciplinary expertise spans biobased materials engineering, non-invasive sensing instrumentation, signal processing, and machine learning, developed through academic training and industry experience. Even before completing her MSc., Susana was hired by PLUX, Wireless Biosignals S.A (Lisbon, 2007-2010), where she developed non-invasive sensing instrumentation and signal processing, prepared the CE mark certification of a class I medical device and participated on the implementation of the ISO 13485 quality system. In 2010, Susana was awarded a competitive (success rate <20%) MIT-Portugal-FCT scholarship and moved to NOVA FCT for her PhD, working in Prof. Cecília Roque’s lab on iron oxide magnetic resonance imaging nanoprobes. Her research involved nanoparticle synthesis, surface functionalization, and material characterization techniques, which she further developed during a 3-month internship with Dr. Puerto Morales (ICMM, Spain) in 2012. In 2016, Susana joined the ERC-funded project SCENT as a postdoctoral researcher to advance a new line of work in Roque’s Lab focused on new biobased artificial olfaction tools for diagnostics. Over the next six years, she developed expertise in optically active biobased materials integrated with machine learning for and undertook several proof-of-concept assessments of this technology for industrial applications. Her efforts in Tech Transfer were recognized with the 1st prize at the R2Value Competition (3k€, NOVA FCT / Madam Park, 2020). She has been a core team member of 2 ERC PoC projects (ENSURE, UNMASK) exploring biobased gas-sensing materials for non-invasive disease diagnostics. As the ENSURE project manager, she coordinated the interactions between research team, 2 clinical partners, and a business partner. Since 2023, Susana has been a senior researcher at NOVA FCT (HfPt, PRR RE-C05-i01.01), focusing on sustainable biosensors for the degradation of pharmaceuticals. She is also a core team member of PROSPLIGN project (Horizon Europe 2023). Susana was the Co-PI of the PROTEIOS project (250k€, FCT, 2022-25) during 2022-2023, and is the PI of the SUBTLE project (50k€, FCT, 2025-26). She has training in Project Management (NOVA Doctoral School, 2021) and Process Management& Business Strategies (The Lean Six Sigma Company/NOVA FCT, 2024). Overall, Susana supervised and co-supervised 16 students (8 BSc. and 8 MSc, graded >18/20), participated in the Examination Committee of 4 MSc theses (main examiner) and 3 PhD theses (main examiner in 1); and organized 12 outreach activities, including media divulgation of her work. In addition, she is part of the team working in the technology transfer of the projects' results with international partners. Susana's research resulted in 36 peer-reviewed publications (17 journal papers and 11 conference papers) and 2 book chapters (h-index 12, 357 citations, WoS), disseminated through 18 oral communications and 15 posters in national and international conferences. She is an invited reviewer of ISI journals (Chemosensors, Applied Sciences, Sensors and Actuators B, Scientific Reports), expert evaluator of National R&D Industrial projects (ANI, 2024) and a member of IEEE Standards Association where she was the Chair of the P2520.4.1 Working Group (2020-2022) developing standards for the performance of electronic noses.
