Lara Sofia Nascimento Palmeira

Lara Palmeira, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and an Assistant Professor at Universidade Portucalense. She is an integrated research member of CINTESIS@RISE, CINTESIS.UPT, Portucalense University. Since 2008 she is also a research collaborator at the Center for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CINEICC), at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Coimbra (UC), in Portugal. In 2017 she completed her Ph.D. on "When weight stigma gets under the skin: The development of Kg-Free - a new integrated acceptance, mindfulness, and compassion-based group intervention", where she investigated the efficacy of an acceptance, mindfulness, and self-compassion intervention for women with overweight and obesity. Her research focuses on third-wave psychological approaches (e.g., ACT, CFT, Mindfulness), specifically on the role of emotion regulation strategies in stigma and well-being in people with several health issues and also on the implementation and test of the efficacy of acceptance, compassion, and mindfulness-based group interventions in promoting mental and physical well-being. She has been involved in several international research projects such as the European H2020 Project "NoHoW: Evidence-based ICT tools for weight loss maintenance"; "Compassionate Schools: Development and efficacy study of a compassion-based intervention to promote teachers and children wellbeing"; and "eBEfree - An ICT adaptation of BEfree: An app-delivered program based on mindfulness, values, and compassion for binge eating". From 2022 to january 2024 she was the lead researcher for the project Care4mommies: The longitudinal impact of psychological flexibility and compassion on mother-baby bonding, which was funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology. She is the author of 38 scientific articles in journals of international and/or national circulation indexed with scientific arbitration and of 7 abstracts in journals of national and/or international circulation. She received 4 awards/distinctions and participated in more than 74 works presented at scientific events to disseminate the results of the research carried out. She is a member of the Portuguese Association for the Study of Obesity (SPEO), APTC, and OPP.
