I am currently on a career path change into the field of data science/ML/AI, having recently completed an intensive Data Science Bootcamp at Le Wagon. I was previously a Post-doctoral researcher and Project leader at the Cytoskeletal Dynamics lab of i3S led by Dr. Ana Carvalho. I used C. elegans as a model to mechanistically study actomyosin-dependent processes like the contractile ring in embryonic cytokinesis and tissues like the gonad or muscle. On the technical side, my work involved a combination of gene editing, high-resolution live imaging, and in vitro protein biochemistry. I made important contributions to the understanding of the actomyosin network that constitutes the cytokinetic ring and was involved in collaborative projects involving myosin in other fields. I was originally trained as a Biochemist, graduating from the University of Porto in 2003, and did my final project in the lab of Prof. Karel Wirtz (Dept. Biochemistry of Membranes, CBLE, University of Utrecht, NL) studying protein modifications upon oxidative stress using proteomics techniques. In 2005 I joined the MSc program in Molecular Genetics of the University of Minho and joined the lab of Prof. Maria João Ramos in the REQUIMTE Associate lab (Faculty of Science, University of Porto) for my thesis work. I studied the structural implications of molecular evolution in mammalian angiogenin genes using computational approaches. I also worked part-time as an information manager for Orphanet-European Rare Diseases Portal (IGMJM,Porto). In 2007 I joined the newly formed lab of Dr. Edgar Gomes at the Myology Group (UPMC/INSERM UMR-787, Paris) dedicated to studying cytoskeleton-mediated nuclear positioning and its impact is cell migration, muscle development, and disease. Through an RNAi screen, I identified 26 proteins as being involved in actin-dependent nuclear positioning. I further characterized three of these targets. During my PhD, I was selected for the 2009 Physiology Course of the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, USA), a prestigious 2-month cell biology intensive course where I got my first contact with C. elegans, my favorite model organism. Outside the lab, I have been committed to improving outreach, societal impact, and the professional conditions of researchers. I was a founding member of the Portuguese National Association of Biochemists and the Association of Portuguese Graduates in France. Within these associations, I was involved in organizing several meetings for both the public and professionals. I have also been involved in institutional scientific and management activities as a Post-doc representative at the Executive Committee and as an organizer of Post-doc seminars.
