Pedro Miguel Vieira Coelho, born on Sep 14 1985, started his academic journey with a Biochemistry BSc at the Faculty of Sciences-University of Porto in 2008. His BSc project "Evaluation of the Anti-Tumor Effect of Imatinib in Melanoma", held at the Faculty of Medicine-University of Porto (FMUP), paved the way for his enduring passion for cancer research, particularly in melanoma. In late 2008, Pedro began lecturing biochemistry laboratory practical classes, for health technology and health science students, as an Invited Assistant Professor in the Chemical Sciences and Biomolecules (CQB) area at the School of Health-Polytechnic of Porto (ESS|P.PORTO), all the while upholding joint research with FMUP. Pedro received a Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) PhD scholarship in 2012. He earned a Metabolism: Clinical and Experimental Doctorate from FMUP in 2017, investigating the obesity-melanoma relationship and unraveling underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms. By 2021, Pedro had attained a tenure-track position as Adjunct Professor at CQB. He delivers lectures such as Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Diagnostics and Biotechnology in many ESS BSc and MSc courses. In addition, he coordinates the Technical Course in Chemistry and Biochemistry Laboratories and the Post-Graduations in Clinical and Metabolic Biochemistry and Advanced Biomolecular Technology. From 2022 to 2023, Pedro managed, as project leader, the FCT-funded research grant "Fat Diet-induced Obesity in Melanoma Metastasis" arising from a collaborative research initiative between ESS and FMUP. Currently, Pedro is an Integrated Researcher at Center for Translational Health and Medical Biotechnology Research (TBIO) at ESS, where he is actively advancing his research while also overseeing the coordination of CellLab facilities and service provision. Pedro's scientific contributions are numerous, and span various domains, both academic and educational, as exemplified by his publications and projects. Pedro published 16 articles in journals, 2 book chapters and more than 35 abstracts/posters in scientific conferences. . Has received 2 awards and/or honors. Participates and/or participated as PhD Student Fellow in 1 project(s), Post-doc in 2 project(s), Principal investigator in 1 project(s), Researcher in 1 project(s) and Supervisor in 2 project(s). Moreover, Pedro has contributed to many conferences and symposia, such as the self-proposed symposium at the "20th Portuguese Congress of Obesity”, in 2016, where he shared his expertise on the influence of adiposity on melanoma, or by organizing the “Medicinal Biotechnology Meeting” and "Iberian Congress on Medicinal Biotechnology", where he also integrated the scientific committees. Beyond his duties as a health sciences teacher, Pedro is committed to fostering the training and career development of young researchers, primarily through supervision, tutoring, and technical instruction. Pedro provided supervision to numerous students through PhD, MSc and BSc programs, as well as mentoring mobility programs. Pedro supervised 1 PhD thesis(es). Supervised 3 MSc dissertation(s) and co-supervised 1. Supervised 3 work(s) of course completion of LSc/BSc and co-supervised 4. In addition, Pedro activly contributes to the academic peer review process, namely as an ad hoc reviewer for “Cancer Science”, “Cancers”, "Journal of Oncology", “Healthcare”, “BioTechniques”, and more, underscoring his invitations and involvement in reviewing for indexed journals showcases his recognition and dedication to the peer-review process and advancing scientific discourse. Moreover, Pedro is a member of two key cancer research associations: the Portuguese and European Associations for Cancer Research (ASPIC & EACR) and the Portuguese and European Society for the study of Obesity (SPEO/EASO). Altogether, Pedro is a Researcher dedicated to unraveling the intricacies of cancer metabolism in obesity and a passionate Biochemistry Professor.
