Yanis El-Masri holds a Master’s Degree in Music Composition obtained at the University of Aveiro (2023), under the supervision of Professor Doctor Evgueni Zoudilkine, and Licenciate Degree in Music Composition by the same institution (2021). In 2021, he was awarded a Merit Grant by the University of Aveiro to complete his Master’s Degree, upon applying and achieving a 19.5/20 mark in the enrollment exams. In 2023, his dissertation “Chamber Concerto for Augmented Electric Guitar and Mixed Ensemble: an exploration of timbre and extended techniques” received an unanimous 20/20 mark. His music studies were initiated in 2005, in Kuwait, while completing an ABRSM course in in classical piano performance. During those years, he also learned how to play the electric guitar and the oud. After, he pursued his studies in Music Composition by attending Moscow State Conservatory (2016/2017), under the tutelage of Professor Doctors Roman Ledenyov, Yuri Kasparov, Tatiana Chudova and Yuri Vorontsov. In 2015, he was awarded 2nd prize in the 11th MGIM A.G. Schnittke Contest (Russia) for the pieces “String Quartet No. 1” and “Eurabia”, and a Special Diploma in the Volshebnaya Lira contest (Russia) for the same works. Yanis El-Masri has been building a body of works that range from solo pieces to orchestral, as well as film music and electronic music, on the scope of Western Art Music and Experimental Music. His works have been performed live at venues such as Casa da Música (Portugal), Club Arabe de Viña del Mar (Chile), and the White Hall of Moscow Conservatory (Russia). His works have been performed by several artists, such as Oumeima El-Khalil, Hussein El-Khalil, Orquesta Marga Marga, David Lloyd, Sharon Kinder, Ricardo Alves, Alabiev Quartet, Igor Goldenberg, and Bassem Al-Ashkar. He has collaborated with film directors Martin Lloyd, Vier Nev, and Nuno Dias. The films he has collaborated with by composing their original soundtracks have been shown at several venues, competitions and festivals, in several countries, including Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Sweden, Ukraine, Bosnia & Herzegovina, United States of America, Malasya, Japan, among others, being subject to several international and national prizes. Notably, the animated short film “A mind sang/ A mãe de sangue” (2019), by film director Vier Nev, to which Yanis El-Masri composed its original soundtrack, was the recipient of awards such as the Vimeo Staff Pick, at Annecy International Animation Film Festival (2020), Honorable Mention – Best Portuguese Short, Prize SPA/ Vasco Granja at Monstra (2020), and Special Mention at Animaphix - International Animated Film Festival (2020). On that sequence, the original soundtrack received positive reviews from the international critiques. Since 2021, the film has been continuously shown at the Wonderspaces exhibition venues in Austin, Philadelphia, and Arizona (EUA). In 2021, he composed, performed, produced, and mixed the full-length album “Apartment L.P.” by progressive rock band “Good Day MACHINE”, released independently. In the same year, his piece “String Quartet No. 2” was selected by conductor Peter Rundell to be performed at the 4th Academia de Verão Remix Ensemble.
