Academic record The grant applicant’s CV is composed of a degree in Chemical Engineering, a masters’ degree started (unfinished) at the University of Minho, and a Masters’ degree in Energy systems and energy policy with a high grade of 17/20, the highlight being the extremely well received master’s thesis. Skills The candidate has also shown great aptitude in different areas, from Chemical Engineering to Economics to Mechanics and now Electrotechnics. He has also interacted and worked closely since 2018 with Portugal’s top experts in energy (e.g. has had over 350 work meetings with Dr Pedro Carvalheira, Portugal’s leading engine expert). Language and personal skills The candidate has lived in England for two years and has had contact with other cultures. He is proficient in English and now is learning Swedish and Japanese. Healthy lifestyle The applicant is an expert swimmer, having swum more than 5,000 km at the Coimbra Olympic pool alone. His lifestyle is extremely healthy and has recently taken up surfing. These activities have given the author an extreme discipline which enable him to program and perform any task on time. Publishing in peer reviewed journals Developed during the gran applicant’s masters’ degree a manuscript was prepared for submission at Fuel journal. The topic of the manuscript was simulation of Internal Combustion Engines, which includes the very difficult topic of turbulent combustion: turbulent combustion constitutes the interaction between a flame and a turbulent flow field. The manuscript was submitted in March 2021 to Fuel journal and rejected in April 2021 as, Fuel noted, the “the fuel conversion model should be checked”. As the manuscript had been approved with distinction by the master’s jury and reflected the life’s work of Dr Pedro Cavalheira it took 6 months of researching for the applicant to realize there was a serious flaw. Namely that it had considered possible to model turbulent combustion through a formula when that is not possible, as turbulent flame propagation speed is essentially a problem of topology. A corrected version of the original manuscript is for the past 12 weeks being evaluated at Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments. “motor.pt” By figuring out the flaw in the original work the author realized he and Dr Pedro Carvalheira had created the first fully functional engine simulator in Portugal (naming it “motor.pt”). This simulator is a 0D 2zone model of an internal combustion engine and is used not to predict how an engine works (not possible) but to show researchers the thermodynamic structure of an energy system. It contains over 10,000 lines of highly organized code (in MATLAB) and a mathematical program to support it (see annex). Since recognizing the value of his work and identifying it properly on Researchgate, there a steady stream of international researchers have read the simulator’s blueprint (rate of 2 per week). Awards and patents Since January 2022 the author has been pursuing copyrighting this simulator. This discovery has also made the author apply, this month, to the REN award for best Master’s degree in Portugal.
