I have developed an integrative approach to the study of fish physiology, from molecular mechanisms and signal transduction up to the whole organism level, in order to understand the basis of animal performance. These aspects together with the recent inclusion of behavioral studies in my research scope can provide a unique and inter-disciplinary approach to investigate how rearing factors affect fish performance and welfare in cultured species. I study changes in physiological and behavioral responses, taking into account potential individual variation, by investigating the interplay between inherent fish factors, diet, and the environment, including their impact on growth performance, health, and metabolic response. The aim of my research is to assist the aquaculture sector with a physiological perspective, in a world dominated by changing production goals and shifting human needs. Within this framework, my ambition is to generate and use this knowledge to contribute to the sustainability of the organisms that make up our seafood as well as their aquatic environments. In 2002 I obtained a MSc. in Marine Biology from the University of Maine (USA). In 2008 I obtained my Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Ottawa (Canada). Between 2009 and 2012 I was granted a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship (MC-IIF) to research at the University of Barcelona (Spain). From 2012 to 2014, during the reinsertion phase of the MC-IIF, I obtained an Associate Researcher position at INTECH- CONICET (Argentina). In 2015 I became an Associate Researcher at CIIMAR with a 5-year contract granted by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT, Portugal). My scientific production is reflected in 32 articles published in peer-reviewed journals (ISI), 16 of them as the 1st author, 10 as the corresponding, and 6 as the senior author. I have published 18 articles in Q1 journals, 11 in Q2 and 3 in Q3. I have been cited 643 times. My records display an h-index of 13. I have published 16 articles and obtained an average of 56 citations/year over the last 5 years. In 2014 I was an invited researcher at Wageningen UR (Netherlands), participating in the EU funded projects AQUAEXCEL (Ref. 262336) and ARRAINA (Ref. KBBE-2011-288925). Over the last 5 years, I have participated in 9 National and 4 Internationally funded projects, obtaining 4 short-term mobility grants to collaborate with colleagues at WUR-IMARES (Netherlands), Instituto de Acuicultura de Torre de la Sal (IATS-CSIC, Spain), University of Murcia (Spain), IFREMER at Palavas (France). Between 2014-2020, I acted as the principal investigator of 4 projects: SEABASS EARLY LIFE (Aquaexcel TNA EU, Ref. AE160011), CARDIOFISH (FCT, Ref. IF/01314/2014), ALGAE-SPARUS (Aquaexcel TNA EU, Ref. 0132/09/04/14b), SEAWEEDPLUS (Aquaexcel TNA EU, Ref. 0094/07/15/32), and as the scientific leader for PEIXEROL at CIIMAR (FCT, Ref. PTDC/CVT-NUT/2851/2014). I was a scientific expert in swimming physiology and welfare of fish representing first Argentina and later Portugal in the EU Cost Action FITFISH FA 1314 (2014-2018). I have directed 1 Ph.D., and 2 MSc. theses, and trained 9 undergraduate students. I have supervised 2 postdoctoral fellows. I am currently supervising 2 Ph.D. students, one of them in partnership with industry (Sanfeed Program, CIIMAR- Univ. Porto). I was a jury member of 3 Ph.D. and 2 MSc. defenses. I also acted as a reviewer in the evaluation of scientific careers (CONICET) and grant applications (CONICET and MINCYT). I was an invited speaker on 9 occasions, with 40 presentations and abstracts published in national and international conferences and workshops, 10 of which were communicated orally. I took part in the organization of 4 international conferences and 3 workshops. I participated in 14 public outreach activities. I have 10 years of teaching experience in several universities. Since 2013 I have acted as an editor for Frontiers in Physiology, Aquatic Physiology (IF 3.367).
