Consequently, oxygen is one of the Chemical Quality Elements required for the implementation of European Union Water Framework Directive. This study uses the example of the Ria Formosa, a meso-tidal lagoon on the south coast of Portugal to demonstrate how monitoring of water qua. 2010. Newton, Alice; Oliveira, P. S.; Icely, John; Foster, P. A.. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/953.
  16. Assessment of the water-leaving reflectances of the oceanic and coastal waters using MERIS satellite products in Sagres off the southwest coast of Portugal. Optical properties of oceanic waters have provided an important tool for observing large scale fluctuations in oceanic conditions by remote sensing. However, there are still problems with calibrating the algorithms that link remote sensing data with in situ measurements, particularly, in coastal areas where there are adjacency affects from land on the reflectance data observed by the satellite sen. 2009. Cristina, Sónia; Goela, Priscila; Icely, John; Newton, Alice; Fragoso, Bruno. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/1106.
  17. Enrichment experiments and primary production at Sagres (S.W. Portugal). Water was collected from the Sagres station (SW Portugal) in September 2002, at a site adjacent to the upwelling centre of Cabo São Vicente, during relaxation of upwelling conditions. Surface and depth samples were enriched with inorganic nutrients in order to evaluate their relative influence on the microalgal assemblage. Small-scale, short-term bioassays involved separate in vitro additions of n. 2008. Loureiro, Sofia; Icely, John; Newton, Alice. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/1083.
  18. Identifying the source of nutrient contamination in a lagoon system. Nutrient concentrations within watercourses are often associated with the input of sewage or the runoff of fertilizers. Due to population increases, there has been a dramatic rise in the amount of fertilizer applied to land, as well as in the further development of sewage treatment plants (STPs), both of which can lead to significant discharges with associated eutrophication risks in coastal water. 2008. Wayland, D.; Megson, D.; Mudge, S.; Icely, John; Newton, Alice. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/1026.
  19. Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone, LOICZ: lessons from Banda Aceh, Atlantis, and Canute. This special issue of Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science synthesizes and updates the developments in science related to Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ). Frequent updates about the dynamic coastal zone are useful and necessary as global change accelerates. There is an urgent need to improve the knowledge and understanding of the vulnerability of society and ecosystems to globa. 2008. Newton, Alice; Icely, John. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/1002.
  20. Residence times in a hypersaline lagoon: using salinity as a tracer. Generally the waters of the Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal have a short residence time, in the order of 0.5 days (Tett, P., Gilpin, L., Svendsen, H., Erlandsson, C.P., Larsson, U., Kratzer, S., Fouilland, E., Janzen, C., Lee, J., Grenz, C., Newton, A., Ferreira, J.G., Fernandes, T., Scory, S., 2003. 21. Temporal and spatial variation of phytopigments in the Western part of the Ria Formosa lagoon, Southern Portugal. The spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton pigments in the western part of Ria Formosa, Portugal, was investigated between September 2000 and July 2002. Sampling stations included the ocean boundary (Anc˜ao inlet) and two different landward boundary situations: 1) the shallow westernmost “blind end” of the lagoon (Ponte) and 2) near a main sewage outlet (Ramalhete). Nutrient concentration. 2007. Pereira, M.; Icely, John; Mudge, S.; Newton, Alice; Rubina, R.. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/1001.
  22. Oxygen depletion in relation to water residence times. The relationship between residence time and oxygen saturation was investigated in a mesotidallagoon in southern Portugal. The system receives no significant freshwater input during the summer months and has a high evaporation rate. These features enable an estimate of residence time from the salinity differences between ocean water entering the system and lagoon water. More than 10 000 GPS referen. 2007. Mudge, S.; Icely, John; Newton, Alice. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/1003.
  23. Oceanographic applications to eutrophication in tidal, coastal lagoons: the Ria Formosa, Portugal. Physical and biogeochemical processes control the impact of eutrophication in tidal, coastal lagoons and the ecosystem response to nutrient enrichment. Ascreening model of eutrophication in a tidal, coastal lagoon considers a well-mixed box, exchanging with the ocean at a daily rate determined by physical processes and converting nutrient to phytoplankton chlorophyll at a fixed yield. The model us. 2006. Newton, Alice; Icely, John. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/997.
  24. The effect of benthic sediments on the dissolved nutrient concentrations and fluxes sediment-seawater nutrient exchange in the Ancão basin, Ria Formosa, Portugal.. The Ria Formosa is a meso-tidal coastal lagoon experiencing enhanced nutrient concentrations. Assessment of sediment–seawater interaction is essential if nutrient dynamics and the risk of eutrophication are to be fully understood. Pore water concentrations of dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite were determined in cores from six sites. Changes in nutrients conc. 2006. Murray, L.; Mudge, S.; Newton, Alice; Icely, John. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/998.
  25. Boundary conditions for the European Water Framework Directive in the Ria Formosa lagoon, Portugal (physico-chemical and phytoplankton quality elements). The dynamics between nutrients, the microplankton assemblage and physical factors were evaluated in the Ria Formosa (S. Portugal) coastal lagoon. Water samples were collected from Ramalhete and Ponte within the lagoon and compared with the conditions at Barra, an oceanic inlet. The two lagoon stations represent the boundary conditions of two different water bodies that have been registered as inte. 2006. Loureiro, Sofia; Newton, Alice; Icely, John. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/990.
  26. Microplankton composition, production and upwelling dynamics in Sagres (SW Portugal) during summer 2001. Microplankton community, production, and respiration were studied alongside physical and chemical conditions at Sagres (SW Portugal) during the upwelling season, from May to September 2001. The sampling station was 5 km east of the upwelling center off Cabo S. Vicente, and 2 km of an offshore installation for bivalve aquaculture.. 2005. Loureiro, Sofia; Newton, Alice; Icely, John. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/988.
  27. Effects of nutrients enrichements on primary production in the Ria Formosa Coastal Lagoon (Southern Portugal). Small-scale, short-term enrichment experiments were conducted in the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon (southern Portugal), to assess the effects of nutrient availability on primary productivity, biomass (as chlorophyll a), and algal composition. Samples were collected from natural communities at three different sites in the western lagoon: Barra, oceanic inlet; Ramalhete, adjacent to a urban waste water. 2005. Loureiro, Sofia; Newton, Alice; Icely, John. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/989.
  28. The yield of chlorophyll from nitrogen: a comparison between the shallow Ria Formosa lagoon and the deep oceanic conditions at Sagres along southern coast of Portugal. The yield of chlorophyll from dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) has been shown to be a potentially useful parameter for predicting eutrophication, particularly, in the northerly, coastal waters of the North East Atlantic (NEA). This study investigates whether this parameter might also be appropriate for the southerly, coastal waters of the NEA. Nitrogen enrichment experiments were carried out usi. 2005. Edwards, Vivien; Icely, John; Newton, Alice; Webster, Ruth. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.1/987.
  29. Management of coastal eutrophication: integration of field data, ecosystem-scale simulations and screening models. A hybrid approach for eutrophication assessment in estuarine and coastal ecosystems is presented. The ASSETS screening model (http://www.eutro.org) classifies eutrophication status into five classes: High (better), Good, Moderate, Poor and Bad (worse). This model was applied to a dataset from a shallow coastal barrier island system in southwest Europe (Ria Formosa), with a resulting score of Good.. 2005.
