Lijian Meng completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at Jilin University, China in 1983, followed by a master's degree in Solid Physics from the Changchun Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1986. Following the attainment of his master's degree, Meng worked at the Changchun Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he served as an assistant investigator for 2 years and subsequently as an auxiliary assistant for 3 years. In June 1991, he pursued a Ph.D. in Physics at Minho University, Portugal, successfully defending his thesis in June 1994. Subsequently, Meng undertook post-doctoral research at the Center of Excellence in Microelectronics and Optoelectronics Processes of the Institute for New Technologies' Development (CEMOP/UNINOVA). Since November 1994, he has been engaged with the Porto School of Engineering (ISEP) at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), initially as an invited auxiliary Professor (1994-1998) and later as an Associate Professor (1998-present). Meng’s dedication and contributions have been recognized, culminating in his tenure appointment in Physics at Minho University, Portugal in 2010. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in various research initiatives, initially as a member of the Physics Center at Minho University and presently as a member of the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Industrial Technology (CIETI), in the Biomaterials and Nanotechnologies research group (NBIN).
