Carlos J. S. Moreira holds a PhD degree in Plant Sciences (2021) from ITQB NOVA , a MSc in Applied Microbiology (2015) from FCUL and a BSc degree in Education in Life Sciences and Mathematics (1999) from IPB. His past multidisciplinary training (Mycology 4 years, and Plant Biology/Chemistry 5 years), which include a 15-month stay in the Univ. Zurich (IPMB UZH), is unique. He is able to endure, and rapidly adapt to complex collaborative projects in new topics. This path led him to his current position: team member (contracted) in a ONR Global funded project and in a Europe Horizon funded project (AgriLoop, in-kind) both focussing interaction of plant polyesters with fungi. His current research focuses impact of plant-derived molecules in fungal growth and in the activation of plant immunity. He has established novel methods to isolate the plant polyester cutin from the peels of fleshy fruits and to analyse it using solution NMR spectra. The NMR method can be applied to fingerprint fine alterations in the polymer caused by mutations; this creates numerous opportunities for e.g. in breeding programmes. His work is impactful for plant biology, as shown on a recent study on suberin from soybean root, where the polyester abundance is remarkably low, published in Frontiers in Chemistry (co-author). He has also supported the design of a unique pipeline to quantify the physicochemical properties of plant polyesters. Finally, he proved that cutin deconstruction generates a new class of PTI elicitors (pre-print, under review Journal of Experimental Botany); of which public release was delayed to allow the registration of a patent (co-inventor); a valuable asset for the progress of this research line that will be strategic for future funding applications. His publication track record is solid: 7 peer-reviewed papers (the first in 2019, work done during his MSc), all in top Q1-journals in the fields of Microbiology, Water treatment and Plant Polymer Chemistry. One papers is under review, and 2 (first author) are in proofing stage (one is a critical review linking cutin chemistry with function; and a research-papers on fungal interaction with suberin). He has presented his work in oral/poster communications, the most recent oral - in PADiBa (2022, Dundee, UK). He was awarded with a 3-months EMBO Short-term fellowship for training in plant immunity assays at IPMB UZH (2019). This was strategic to start collaborating with Prof. Zipfel - leading scientist in the topic, who became his PhD co-supervisor (1-year stay at his lab). He has a long teaching experience (teacher of Life Sciences and Mathematics for approximately 10 years) and has developed competencies that are essential to supervise students at diverse educational levels. He has supported the scientific training of ten MSc students in one-week lab rotation projects (curricular unit of their MSc programs), assuming the role of supervisor for three of them. In addition, he supervised a PhD student's lab rotation project (B. Oliveira, ITQB NOVA) in a study requiring proteomics analysis of fungi (co-authored paper), and a BSc six-months internship (G. Gonsalves, ISEP) on fungal ecology. Currently, he co-supervises an Erasmus student from Thessaloniki Uni. and a MSc student thesis IHMT-NOVA. He is a Co-PI of the Green-G project, awarded last year with a 50K$ and is currently organising an international conference devoted to novel bio-based communication systems. He was part of the organizing committee of the 8th ITQB NOVA PhD Student's Meeting and the ITQB NOVA PhD Student's Retreat. It is his conviction that researchers have the responsibility to contribute to scientific awareness by participating in science outreach events. To disseminate his work and support the effort to raise the scientific literacy of our society, he has participated in the International Microorganism Day, the European Researchers Night, ITQB NOVA Open Day and "A Scientist Goes to School".
