I obtained my PhD in biomedicine in 2012 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Porto. I then trained as a postdoc at IPATIMUP as an FCT fellow, and since 2017, I have been leading an independent research line at i3S. My expertise in gastric cancer and E-cadherin mediated signaling is reflected in my track record of 56 peer-reviewed publications (5 senior and 12 first-authorships), 5 book chapters and an h-index of 28 (SCOPUS) with over 3200 citations. I was distinguished as one of the top 25 under-40 most promising researchers in Portugal (2018) and with the No Stomach for Cancer Award for Gastric Cancer Research (2017). I have made seminal contributions to the understanding of E-cadherin dysfunction and associated molecular mechanisms during gastric cancer progression (Gastric Cancer, 2022; J Infect Dis, 2022). I provided the first evidence that mutations affecting the signal peptide core block E-cadherin translation and delivery, leading to diffuse gastric cancer (Molecular Cancer, 2018). In alignment with my commitment to translate research findings into the clinics, I have developed two bioimaging approaches, which are part of the current pipeline to uncover the functional relevance of E-cadherin variants found in disease contexts (Scientific Reports, 2018 & 2016). My research has a striking impact in patient management, illustrated in my involvement in the establishment of clinical guidelines for Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer since 2015 (Lancet Oncol, 2020). I collaborate with several groups worldwide through the International Gastric Cancer Consortium, for which I am responsible to assess the pathogenicity of E-cadherin variants. In this context, I was invited to present my most recent results in the last Consortium meeting (Porto, 2024). Of note, I was a contact reference and team member of the CDH1 Expert Working Group from ClinGen, a NIH-funded resource dedicated to define the clinical relevance of genetic variants. Currently, I supervise a team of two PhD students, a master student and a postdoctoral researcher, focusing on the study of cell-matrix dynamics. I have attracted funding - 310K as PI, 410K as co-PI and over 3.2M as team member - from FCT, the American Association of Patients with Hereditary Gastric Cancer No Stomach for Cancer, NIH, National Science Foundation (NSF - USA), The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020), Operational Programme for Competitiveness Factors (COMPETE) and Novartis. Further, I have secured my salary since 2009 through competitive individual funding calls. I am a young researcher, mother of two children (2013, 2017), with a strong multidisciplinary collaborative network and international recognition. In the past 10 years, I have participated in 23 international scientific meetings and workshops, and have been invited as grant expert reviewer, academic editor for the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, guest editor for Cancers, review editor in Frontiers in Gastroenterology and in Frontiers in Oncology, reviewer for 24 peer-reviewed journals, and member of the scientific committee in 2 national and 6 international scientific meetings. I am committed to disseminate my results and to contribute to scientific literacy by lecturing in PhD and Master graduate programs, and participating in outreach activities promoted by i3S and the social media.
