Dr. Fernando A.L. Pacheco was born in 1967 in Mozambique. He holds a B.Sc. in Engineering Geology (1991) from the Coimbra University (Portugal), with an ERASMUS student specialization in Geochemistry (1991) from the Utrecht University (The Netherlands); a M.Sc. in Geosciences, with a specialization in Environment and Territory Management (1996) from the Coimbra University (Portugal); a Ph.D. degree in Hydrogeology (2001) from the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro University – UTAD (Portugal); and an Aggregation title in Environmental Geochemistry (2011) from the UTAD. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geochemistry at the UTAD, being the Head of Geology Department since 2013. He joined the Vila Real Chemistry Research Centre in 2005, where he still develops most of his research, but H also collaborates with various Brazilian Research Groups, namely the POLUS - Land Use Policy group from the São Paulo State University (UNESP). He published over 100 research papers in International journals, co-authored by over 100 scientists of a various nationalities (Portugal, The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain), and participated in many and integrated the organizing and scientific committees of a number of national and international conferences and seminars. Dr. Pacheco reviewed over 700 manuscripts for almost 70 different International Journals. In 2016, He received from Clarivate Analytics Publons the Sentinel of Science Award as the Top Overall Contributor to the Peer Review of the Field of Earth and Planetary Sciences. In 2017 he was awarded as Top overall Contributor to Peer Review of journal Science of Total Environment. His research interests focus on hydrologic models coupled with weathering algorithms, to assess hydraulic parameters at catchment scale, and relate them with variations in mineral weathering rates over time, in areas with significant anthropogenic pressure. Complementary to weathering studies in rural catchments, Dr. Pacheco has interests on multivariate statistical and environmental analyses of surface and groundwater databases, aiming the interpretation of pollution patterns and contaminant pathways in small watersheds, with parallel focus on the prevention of Lake Eutrophication and groundwater contamination. His current investigation consists of studies on water security and payments for ecosystem services aiming the production of clean water in headwater catchments. He also studied the role of land use changes on water quality degradation and biodiversity declines (namely the role of environmental land use conflicts), and the attenuation of hydrologic extremes (floods, droughts) through implementation of detention basins and decentralized rainwater harvesting systems in catchments. He coordinated (2016-2020) the research line BEST of INTERACT project – “Integrated Research in Environment, Agro-Chain and Technology”, co-financed by the ERDF through the North Regional Operational Program 2014/2020. He is currently coordinating the ENTIRE project related with the consequences for Paraopeba River water quality and public water supply of a tailings dam collapse in Brumadinho (MG, Brazil), financed by the Vale Mining Company. He is also actively involved in International cooperation with the Federal Institute of Triângulo Mineiro and the Regional Coordination of Environmental Justice Prosecutors in the Paranaíba and Baixo Rio Grande River Basins (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), as well as with the San Paulo State University, where he is participating in scientific projects focused on soil degradation, lecturing short courses to post graduate students. Since 2017, Dr. Pacheco is Associate Editor or Section Editor of five JCR/SCOPUS journals, namely the Elsevier's Science of the Total Environment, the Springer's "Arabian Journal of Geosciences", and the MDPI journals "Sustainability", "IJERPH" and "Water", , for which He already edited nearly 1000 manuscripts.
