I obtained my PhD in Biology, specialty of Cellular Biology, from the University of Coimbra in 2010. I completed an MBA in 2021. From February 2011 to February 2013, I was an associate researcher at the Division of Neuroscience, at Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Central Florida (UCF), USA. From March 2013 to Aug 2018, I was a post-doc research fellow at CICS-UBI and between Oct 2016 and Oct 2017 I was an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Beira Interior. Since Sept. 2018 I am Assistant Researcher at CICS-UBI. Since September 2022 I am an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Beira Interior. My research work aims to target oxidative stress in Parkinson's Disease (PD), to develop new therapeutic strategies to halt disease progression over time. She has disclosed the mechanistic role Nox1 in PD, validating it as a target candidate for therapy development. As for publications, I have 1 aproaved patent; published 33 papers, 1 book chapter, 3 abstracts in conference proceedings and the edition of a Book, in the field of PD; Nox1; Neuroprotection; Neuroinflammation and Applied Biotechnology. Currently I have 1471 citations and an h-index of 16. I am principal investigator or team member in national and international research projects, addressing the field of Parkinson disease, Nox1, neuroprotection in PD. A total of 11 research project addressing Parkinson disease, the role of NADPH oxidase 1 in the disease, and Ionic liquids-based therapeutic development for PD, were financed by national and international sources: 6 as team member (FCT: €35.000, €220.597; Centro2020: €1.199.326; NIH: $398.378 and $327.285) and 5 as principal investigator (PT2020: €606.086, Genkyotex: €15.000, Women Tech EU: €75.000; €4000 EIT Innostar; €3500 Re-UNITA). I have strategically built-up national and international, collaborations to stir my projects forward, namely with: Dr. Marina Boido, UniTo, Italy; Serena Stanga, UniTo, Italy; Dr. Jesus Ruberte París, UAB, Spain; Dr Mara Freire. To boost the transfer of my knowledge to the industry, I have founded a spinoff (NeuroSoV registered trademark) http://neurosov.com/, that has won the Health Cup the UBImedical seed capital Award in 2018. NeuroSoV, was selected to be a member of the BGI-MIT program. I have received several distinctions: The 2018 Health Cup awarded by UBImedical, the 2020 Best University Startup, Startup Olé, Spain, the Bio-All international Award, the EIC Innostar voucher award and recently the Women Tech EU award. She was the finalist of the 2019 Born from Knowledge award by Agência Nacional de Inovação and the Amyris Innovation BIG Impact Award in 2021. I was invited speaker in national academic institutions and speaker in national and international meetings. All communications addressed the role of Nox1 in PD and the application of ionic-liquids formulations as therapeutic strategies. I was organizer or member of the organization of the New Parkinson's Therapies 2022 workshop, the International advance course RegUBI2018; the SPCE-TC 10th international meeting, the 2018 international brain awareness week at CICS-UBI, the CICS-UBI open days and the Science and Technology Week at CICS-UBI. I am member of the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience and the Society for Neurosciences. I supervised/co-supervised 2 pos-doc researcher, 1 PhD student, 14 MSc Students, 2 BSc Students and 2 MD students, and I am currently supervising 3 PhD and 2 MSc students. I was the vice-coordinator of the Neurological and Neurovascular Disease Group at CICS-UBI, and currently Member of the Scientific Council of the FCS-UBI and member of the CICS-UBI animal facilities (ORBEA).
