Hugo Paquete is a transmedia artist, academic, and researcher specializing in sound art, computer music and post-digital aesthetics. Paquete completed his educational journey with a PhD in Digital Media Art in 2022 from a joint program between Aberta University and the University of Algarve. His academic background includes a curricular component in the PhD of Musical Sciences at the New University of Lisbon (2017), a Master's degree in Contemporary Artistic Creation from Aveiro University (2014), and a degree in Fine Art from the School of Arts and Design Caldas da Rainha, Portugal (2011). He currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Algarve's School of Education and Communication and is a researcher at the Research Centre for Arts and Communication (CIAC) as part of the Digital Media-Art Group. Additionally, Paquete is the founder and CEO of Absonus Lab, a private non-profit association, focusing on speculative mixed research and experimentation in sound, music, and digital media. Absonus Lab is integrated within the Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Media Art Platform (EMAP) network. Paquete's research employs mixed methodologies to explore the intersection of sound studies, digital art, and practice-based research. His work focuses on the cultural and sociological impact of technology in digital art, computer music, and sound art, framed through cybercultural and technocultural perspectives, often conveyed via post-techno aesthetics. He is particularly interested in the meta-political potential of technology and innovation, investigating how subcultural art groups engage with technology and capital as both artifacts and concepts within creative processes of invention and resistance. His research includes in-depth analyses of post-minimal, post-industrial, and post-techno aesthetics, as well as rhythmic and noise music, within transmedia and digital art practices, addressing the production, reception, and circulation of sound and music as social and cultural phenomena. His practice-based research merges image, sound, and music composition with performance technology and tech-artifact development, all within the realm of computer music. He has a strong focus on multichannel sound projection, object-oriented composition, and performative gesture-expression using computer technologies and interactive systems. His work explores micro and macro sound synthesis, algorithms, AI, and stochastic probabilities, framed by post-techno music aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from scientific fields like physics, astronomy, and biology, he seeks to expand perceptual boundaries, integrating hyper-sonic and hyper-optical dimensions of sound and image into liminar contemporary discourse. Hugo Paquete has been involved in solo and collaborative projects. In 2010, with Lithuanian artist Julijonas Urbonas created "Talking Doors," which received a Distinction in Interactive Art at Prix Ars Electronica Festival, among other accolades. From 2011 to 2020, Paquete took part in residencies at the ZKM/Hertzlab in Karlsruhe. One of his works during this time was "Orbital Excentricity" (2019), a real-time satellite tracking system for music composition. Paquete collaborated with German media artist Chris Ziegler at ZKM on works such as "Corpus Pygmalion" (2011), "Corpus" (2017-2018), "Cosmos" (2018), and "ODO" (2020). His latest collaboration, "Yugen," (2024) with Christine Bonansea Saulut and Ziegler, exploring AI in performance. Paquete's work has been supported by various institutions, including a Leonardo da Vinci grant (2011), CreArt Project EU Cultural Funds (2016-2019), a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Grant (2017), an FCT fellowship (2017-2022), and a European I-Portunus grant (2019), along with Dgartes support in 2021 and 2022. Besides his artistic endeavors, Paquete has made significant academic contributions through his publications and presentations at national and international events.
