Annabel Dias Barrocas Fernandes was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1977. She has Portuguese nationality and is resident in Covilhã, Portugal. Graduated in Chemistry - Scientific Branch from the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (FCUP) in 1999, obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Beira Interior (UBI) in 2014. Between 1999 and 2011, developed professional activity in industry, mainly in the area of Quality and Environmental Management Systems, according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. In 2012 started a FCT financed Ph.D. programme (SFRH/BD/81368/2011) under the theme "Electrochemical treatment of sanitary landfill leachates" and, between 2015 and 2018, benefited from a postdoctoral grant, financed by FCT (SFRH/BPD/103615/2014), under the theme "Sustainable treatment of effluents from urban wastes management". Since 2018, she is a researcher at UBI, FibEnTech Research Unit, and develops her research in the Chemistry Department. Develops studies in the field of environmental electrochemistry applied to the degradation of persistent organic pollutants present in real and simulated effluents. Also, applies/develops analytical methodologies for the monitoring of environmental parameters during the treatments. More recently, she has been focused on the study and development of bioelectrochemical processes, aiming sustainable treatment solutions in a circular economy approach.
