Ana Preto (APreto) is Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology, senior researcher at CBMA, University of Minho (UMinho) since 2007. She graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1998 and completed her PhD in Human Biology by the Faculty of Medicine in 2004, both at the University of Porto. APreto was a PhD student of the PhD Program GABBA and performed the PhD in IPATIMUP in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, Wales, UK (2000/2004). From 2004 to 2007 had a Post-Doc position at IPATIMUP. She was the former Director of the MSc in Molecular Genetics and of the BSc in Biochemistry at the UMinho. Since 2009 at CBMA, APreto has been interested in understand how environmental exposome, namelly diet-derived microbiota metabolites have influence in the biology of cells, using "normal" colon, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and colorectal cancer cells as models. She has been focus in unravelling the molecular and cellular mechanism of response to short chain fatty acids (SCFA) namely acetate, propionate, butyrate and other metabolites produced by the diet-derived microbiota. Ana Preto has also been focus in understanding the role of KRAS mutations signalling pathways in autophagy, apoptosis and tumour microenvironment regulation and its impact in colorectal cancer (CRC) survival. AP as pharmacist has been interested in the identification of new molecular targets and mechanisms, which could inspire other groups, with whom she collaborates, to the development of new bioinspired compounds/systems. In this context, APreto group and collaborators recently established the "proof of concept" for PMC79 a promising patented Ru-compound specific for KRAS hotspot mutations opening a new avenue in the therapy of resistant cancer harbouring KRAS mutations (international patent PCT WO/2023/161781A1). APreto emerging interest is in environment risk assessment, namelly on understanding how the environmental exposome and biological stressors derived from aquatic and agrifood sources might impact on the microbiota and on the biology of cells. APreto has served as Reviewer at 35 peer-reviewed journals and was evaluator for: research PhD grants at the "Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR), Luxembourg; research projects from the Gabinete de Apoio à Investigação (GAI), from the Faculty of Medicine from the University of Coimbra and research projects from the "Institut National du Cancer" (INCa), France. APreto has been editor of several research journals, namely Guest Associate Editor at Frontiers in Nutrition, Frontiers in Oncology and Cells. APreto has been involved in the organising committees and chair of both National and International meetings. Granted 7 prizes and 4 grants; supervised 2 post-doctoral fellows and 42 post-graduate students including 31 Master students and 11 PhD students (2 ongoing). APreto participated as team member, PI or Co-PI in 17 research projects: 14 National, 2 European (1 FP7 and 1 Marie Curie) and 1 USA (financed by KoDiscovery company) reflecting her multidisciplinary scientific expertise. . Co-authored 3 Patents. APreto has 85 Scientific Publications (68 Papers in scientific journals with peer review indexed in ISI; 17 Abstracts published in proceedings of scientific meetings), 1 book chapter, and 149 Scientific Communications (40 Oral communications and 109 Posters).
