Nathália Castro da Silva is a PhD Scholar in Criminology from the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto. Her doctoral project is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology – FCT. She holds a master's degree in Criminology from the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto. She has a postgraduate degree in Criminal Sciences and a law degree from the Federal University of Maranhão/Brazil. She has a degree recognised by the University of Minho. She is a lawyer regularly registered with the Portuguese Bar Association (OA 67575P) and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/MA 25192). She is a member of the World Society of Victimology (WSV), the International Association of Criminology in Portuguese (AICLP), the Committee on Methodological Approaches and Tools in Migration Research (Meth@Mig) – IMISCOE, and the Help-The-Researchers Working Group - LaEUMiDI. She is a Victim Support Technician certified by the Criap Institute. Her interests include victimological research using qualitative methodologies, the study of victimised migrant women, the phenomenon of secondary victimisation from the justice system, intersectional perspectives in data analysis, and the development of Narrative Victimology. As part of her master's thesis, she carried out qualitative research on migrant women victims of crime and their interaction processes with Portuguese criminal police agencies. To the best of her knowledge, she applied the methodological and analytical approach of Narrative Victimology in an empirical study for the first time in Portugal. In this field of study, she is co-authoring a book chapter entitled "'Because I was the one to blame, right?' - Secondary victimisation of migrant women", which was published in 2024 in the book "Investigating and Combating Gender-Related Victimization" (IGI Global). She is a member of the scientific committee of the Victimology Masterclass - 1st Edition - ‘Narrative Victimology: From Theory to Practice’, which will be held in 2025 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto. She was a member of the Common Study Programme in Critical Criminology organising committee, held in Porto in November 2024. For four years, she was a member of the NAJUP "Negro Cosme" (2008-2012), a research and extension group linked to the Law Department of the Federal University of Maranhão, which uses popular education in human rights and Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy as references for its extension practice. As a member of the centre, she was a member of the organising committee for two scientific events held in 2009 and 2010. She was also a student representative on the Departmental Assembly of the UFMA Law course for two consecutive years (2010-2011), and a member of the I de Maio Academic Centre - CAIM (2012). She was a legal advisor at the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Maranhão/Brazil for eight years, five months, and fifteen days. Within the scope of this function, she worked on attendance of the victimised and vulnerable people, such as women and young victims of gender-based violence.
