Patrícia Alexandra Oliveira Pereira Kowalski

Patrícia Pereira got her PhD in Biology at University of Aveiro (UA) in 2009. Then, she had 7 years of post-doctoral research (Centre of Environmental and Marine Studies/UA, Minho University, IPMA) sponsored by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) over two grants. In the meantime, she performed research trainee abroad (Columbia University and Albert Einstein College; New York; USA) with renowned researchers in the neurotoxicology field. Since 2019, P. Pereira is an Assistant Researcher at the Biology Department of UA, a position granted by FCT under an international call, where she coordinates the “Neurotoxicity, Neuroprotection and Behavior” research line (https://www.fisiotox.com). In the last 5 years, P. Pereira has been primarily focused on investigating the mechanisms of mercury (Hg) neurotoxicity, making use of fish as models and of a variety of innovative tools to address Hg toxicodynamics, fish neuro-physiology, brain morphometry and behavior. Notably, her work pioneered on disclosing the vulnerability of the fish nervous system to Hg, specifically to inorganic Hg previously claimed as low toxic to aquatic species. These findings represent a new paradigm on the Hg toxicity in wildlife. In this scope, she had coordinated a review article with international collaborators on the neuronal/sensory toxicity of Hg in fish. Recently, the neurotoxicity of other relevant contaminants (e.g., pesticides) have been investigated in an alternative animal model (the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans). In parallell, she has been investigating the neuroprotection afforded by marine macroalgae to fish against Hg toxicity. P. Pereira research has been interdisciplinary and collaborative with involvement in several national and international R&D projects, as well as in research services. Between 2021 and 2023, she coordinated a research and outreach project (SCREEN&TOXIN) (around 125k euros). P. Pereira supervised 3 PhD thesis, several MSc thesis, research fellows, and national and foreign BSc students. Currently, she is supervising 2 PhD students, a MSc student, a technical researcher, while mentoring BSc students. P. Pereira published 70 papers in international journals with referees, 3 book chapters and 8 conference papers. She has been cited 1766 times (without self-citations), resulting in an h-index of 28 (Web of Science 10/04/2024). She has presented about 80 communications in national and international meetings. She reviews around 8 articles per year to prestigious journals, is on the Editorial Board of 2 SCI journals (Fishes; Toxicology Reports), participates regularly in academic juries, while often contributes to stakeholders' engagement activities and scientific outreach. Between 2019 and 2023, she was member of the scientific committee of the Master in Ecotoxicology and Risk Analysis of University of Aveiro. Currently, she teaches the laboratorial class of Animal Physiology at University of Aveiro, in parallel with research activities.
