Mafalda Valente Fernandes

I hold a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biochemistry (2022) from the NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon, with a final grade of 16/20. In 2024, I completed my Master of Science (MSc) in Biochemistry with a final grade of 17/20. Currently, I am working at the Biochemistry and Bioenergetics of Heme Proteins Research Laboratory-UCIBIO-Applied Molecular Biosciences Research Unit, where I also work on preparation for PhD applications. My research interests include the characterization of electroactive microorganisms, especially Geobacter species. These organisms transform chemical energy into electrical current and are key players in the biogeochemical cycling of metals, including toxic elements like uranium. My work utilizes a range of biophysical techniques, with a particular emphasis on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and redox titrations monitored by UV-Visible spectroscopy.
