André Filipe Baltazar Alves is currently a PhD student enrolled at Health Sciences Program from The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, after being awarded a fully funded FCT PhD grant (2020.09481.BD) with the project "Beneficial effects of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Akkermansia muciniphila delivery systems in inflammatory bowel disease and prediabetes rodent models ". He was a bachelor's degree in biology with branch in Biomedicine from Faculty of Science and Technology at University of Algarve, followed by a master's degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Algarve. He was the opportunity to acquire a solid knowledge on medical and biological sciences, particularly in the context of cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, plasmids, genetics and pathology. As a research fellow at iCBR-FMUC in the HEALTHYAGING 2020 project (CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-000012), being part of the research group "Insulin Resistance and Diabetic Angiopathy", coordinated by Flávio Reis, he developed research work related to therapeutic and nutraceutical options in the prevention and/or treatment of metabolic and renal disorders, using animal models of prediabetes and diabetic nephropathy. During the last 2 years he have been involved in several preclinical research projects, such as FRUTIFY ¿Use of blueberry juice as a nutraceutical strategy targeting gut dysbiosis to prevent the progression from prediabetes to diabetes¿ [PTDC/SAU-NUT/31712/2017], funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and "Remielinization promoting strategies for an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis" [INOVC2020-SAAC-CENTRO-46-2016-01-5625], funded by INOVC 2020. In addition, he participated in the development of a project related with a ¿Semi-solid formulation for voluntary oral administration of bioactive compounds¿, which is currently under provisional patent request (PPP nº 20201000020530), During my research carrier, he had the opportunity to (co)author 9 full-papers published in international peer-reviewed journals (2 as first author). He was mentoring/tutoring 12 students from different master's degrees (laboratory rotation and master's thesis) and countries. He attended training to obtain Function A and B for manipulation and design of animal experimental protocols, certified by DGAV, the National Authority for Regulation of Animal Research.
