My long-term scientific goal is to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate neurodegeneration. During my post-doctoral training at the Rockefeller University, I have begun investigating this problem, by focusing on the role of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in a model of retinal degeneration in Drosophila. Since 2008, I have continued this work as an independent investigator at ITQB-UNL, leading a scientific group now with 4 people, including 1 PhD student, 1 MSc student and 1 postdoc. Our focus as been the role of Ire1/Xbp1 signalling in retinal development and degeneration in Drosophila. More recently we started a project on the physiological role of the Endoplasmic Reticulum membrane complex (EMC) in Drosophila and mice, that led to the identification of Xport-A as an EMC client. We continue to focus on the role of Xport-A as a chaperone during Rh1 biogenesis.
