Soheyl Sazedj is experienced in rehabilitation of old buildings since 1992. He had several rehabilitation projects in the city center of Vienna, Austria. He based his rehabilitation projects on low energy consumption during life cycle and proved the success of the projects during a 5-year observance. Later, he dedicated himself to sustainable construction and masonry. He was involved in the rehabilitation of some heritage buildings as palaces and churches in Portugal where he established his main line of research in sustainable rehabilitation of old buildings. He wrote his PhD thesis about “Analysis of Sustainability of Structural Masonry”. He was an invited assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon from 2010 to 2022 when he retired from university work but continued his research being a permanent member of the CIAUD Center for Investigation of Architecture, Urbanism and Design of FAUL. He is at the moment supervising a doctorate student. He has published his findings in international and national peer reviewed conferences, as book chapters from Springer and finally in the journal Construction and Building Materials of Elsevier. His main research projects are EFBUCO Environmental Friendly Building Construction and PHEB Protecting Heritage in Harsh Environment by Biopolymers. In 2013/2014, together with other colleagues and academic institutions, he installed a one-year postgraduate course for rehabilitation in the World Heritage City of Elvas. The heritage in Elvas is mainly military architecture and for this purpose the municipality of Elvas and the surrounding cities mainly promoted the course as well as the neighboring Spanish city of Badajoz. The 42 students were architects, engineers, historians, restaurateurs and economists of the municipalities. They studied the pathologies of several cases and developed rehabilitation solutions. He also collaborated with the internationally famous Hercules Laboratory of the University of Évora in cooperation with municipalities of the region for rehabilitation of old religious buildings during his work at the University of Evora from to 2010 to 2015 as invited assistant professor. He collaborates since 2018 with the German Aerospace Centre and the Renewable Energy Chair of the University of Evora for coordination, authorship and structural design of several construction projects of the Evora Molten Salt Platform, a research facility to generate electricity by using sun light and liquid salt as heat transfer medium and using CO2 for cost reducing. The facility consists of a 760 m parabolic trough collector loop and the necessary equipment to produce electricity. Despite this episode, he never discontinued his rehabilitation work and is until the present involved in rehabilitation projects of art deco, pombalino or similar buildings in Lisbon where his focus is to add value to the buildings regarding sustainability, environmental comfort, well being and affordability.

The prototype is a facade panel, metallic grid of 2x1m, that consists of photovoltaic cells, generating energy, and ornamental elements, combining esthetics and shadowing effect for the bioclimatic benefit of the building, each occupying 50% of the panel. Construction solutions are studied, evaluated and compared with each other concerning gas emissions, embodied energy and costs. The Life Cycle Assessment of these construction solutions are also evaluated and compared by using a virtual building model. 2013/09 - 2015/06 Creation of a postgraduate course named Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings and Economical Urban Regeneration. This course was a joint endeavor of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, University of Évora, University of Extremadura of Spain, the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre and the Municipality of Elvas. The course was hold in the Portuguese boarder city of Elvas that has a reach heritage of military architecture.

The building belongs to the art deco era of the 1930ties and the rehabilitation goals are respecting the original architecture, energy efficiency with minimum energy costs and to create apartments with environmental comfort. 2017/08 - 2018/11 Construction project of an exterior elevator for the world heritage building Colegio Espirito Santo of the University of Evora. Maximum care had to be taken not to damage the foundation and the wall of the building, specially considering all the connections and entrances to the building.
