In 2018, Diogo concluded his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the University of Aveiro (UA), with a final grade of 15. During this period, he acquired knowledge across various life science fields, including organic chemistry, cytology and histology, physiology, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, among others. Additionally, Diogo dedicated part-time hours to volunteer at two microbiology labs within the Department of Biology (UA). Here he accompanied routine biology lab work, including cell culturing and bacterial transformations. His B.Sc. culminated in a project entitled “Biofunctionalization of cellulose nanocrystals for the development of systems for the treatment and diagnosis of cancer”. Afterwards, Diogo enrolled into a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, specializing in Biomolecular Methods, at UA. He acquired knowledge in fields such as applied biochemistry, proteomics/metabolomics, cytometry/immunology, and particularly advanced and biomimetic biomaterials. This last field became the focus of his thesis, entitled “Liquefied capsules containing microparticles with variable stiffness to control cell differentiation”, where he gained expertise in producing and functionalizing microparticles and co-encapsulating them with human adipose stem cells for mechanically-guided cell differentiation. This project was under the scope of the ERC Advanced Grant ATLAS (GA: 669858), with the objective to integrate cells from different units of tissue physiology, namely bone and hematopoietic basic elements and consider the interactions between the immune and skeletal systems. Early in his Master’s, Diogo also volunteered part-time at a CICECO lab at UA where he continued stability studies related to his B.Sc. project. Diogo concluded his Master’s in 2021 with a final grade of 17. Immediately after his Master’s, Diogo initiated a professional, full-time IEFP internship as a laboratory technician in quality control at Corticeira Amorim, lasting 9 months before he continued working full-time. Here he was responsible for several tasks, including sample preparation and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Since then, he has taken a scientific writing online course (Coursera), as well as taken on freelance scientific writing and copyediting jobs at the Bio-Protocol and Advanced Science News to further develop his skills in this area. Currently, Diogo is actively engaged in research under a prominent European project. Since November 2023, he was hired by the COMPASS research group through a research grant, where he carries out research in the framework of the project PRISM-LT “PRInted Symbiotic Materials as a dynamic platform for Living Tissues production“ (GA: 101070913) funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC). He has been actively participating in meetings for this european consortium project, where he deals with leading experts from multiple countries and sectors, including In Society (Italy), University of Glasgow (UK), Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), CELLINK (Sweden), and Radboud University (Netherlands). He also delved into extracurricular activities, including a non-degree-awarding course on “Methods and Techniques for Environmental Studies” and participating in a prestigious international conference, SUPRALIFE Second School. Diogo has also submitted a review manuscript, where he holds the position of first co-author. This manuscript is currently under revision and is entitled “Strategies to decouple cell micro-scale and macro-scale environments for designing multifunctional biomimetic tissues”.
