My name is Tuhin Malik, and I am a researcher at CFISUC, University of Coimbra. I completed my PhD at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (2020) after earning an M.Sc. in Physics from IIT Dhanbad (2014) and a Bachelor of Physics Honors from the University of Calcutta (2011). I have published 42 articles and 2 book chapters, achieving an h-index of 16 on InspireHEP and Google Scholar. My work has appeared in prestigious journals such as Physical Review Letters, Physics Letters B, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Physical Review D, and Physical Review C—with one PRC paper (Phys. Rev. C 98 (2018) 3, 035804) cited over 250 times for linking nuclear matter properties with neutron star characteristics following GW170817. In most cases, I have served as the first or corresponding author, taking primary responsibility for the research. My collaborations span several groups in India (including the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Physical Research Laboratory, and Institute of Physics) and European institutions (Universities of Coimbra, Caen, a group in Bucharest, and CAMK Warsaw), as well as partnerships in Salamanca, Frankfurt, and Cracow. Early in my career, I secured an international travel grant to attend conferences in France and the UK and held a Research Assistant position at BITS Pilani during the pandemic, before joining Coimbra as a Researcher (INVESTIGATOR DOUTORADO NÍVEL 1) on a 3+3 year FCT-funded contract. My expertise in statistical methods, neutron star equations of state, and relativistic mean-field models has enabled me to constrain nuclear models via Bayesian inference—a contribution that is making a lasting impact in the field. I have presented my findings at international conferences and workshops such as ECT*, IST Lisbon, Kyoto, Caen, and events at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. In addition to my research, I serve on the editorial board of Frontiers in Physics and review for journals like Physical Review D, The Astrophysical Journal, European Physical Journal C, and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. I have acted several times as a jury member for MSc and PhD examinations and organised a weekly Journal Club in my group. My research interests focus on neutron stars—their macroscopic and microscopic properties, the equation of state of nuclear and stellar matter, exotic core matter, and the hadron-quark phase transition—and I am skilled in Bayesian inference, machine learning, data analysis, and parallel computing. Currently, I co-supervise PhD student Milena Bastos Albino (FCT-supported at CFisUC) and supervise Master’s student João Cartaxo, while mentoring several Indian PhD candidates along with many master’s, and bachelor’s students, and summer interns. My work has not only advanced our understanding of nuclear matter under extreme conditions but also fostered an active international research community. I have led collaborative projects resulting in joint publications and workshops that continually push the boundaries of astrophysics and nuclear physics. Through leadership in research supervision and academic service, I help shape the next generation of scientists by mentoring emerging scholars and promoting innovative methodologies. Recently, I reviewed grant applications for the National Science Center Poland’s SONATINA-7 scheme, contributing expertise to the ST2 panel focused on fundamental matter studies. I am also part of a broad collaboration network, including the Einstein Telescope (OSB, FRTE 0.3) and the European Consortium for Astroparticle Theory (EuCAPT). Research Grants as PI: I am also the Principal Investigator of two advanced computing projects—one an FCT Advanced Large-Scale Computing Grant (grant no. 2024.14108.CPCA.A3) and the other a EUROHPC Development Grant (EHPC-DEV-2024D12-009).
