Catarina Breia Dias (Lisboa, 1994) is an architect. Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon in 2018, she still took a period of 6 months for exchange at PUC-RIO (Rio de Janeiro). The final thesis IN THE VOID: THE PATH AND THE MARKET Path between Alameda do Beato and Calçada do Duque de Lafões (2018), in which she intends to explore the pedestrian paths to consolidate the city voids of Lisbon, articulating with collective equipment, and requalifying the public space. She was a member of the collective Angular, a resident in the Creative Cluster Trienal de Arquitetura de Lisboa, a group formed in 2016 that emerged with the will to develop architecture practices. This group was formed from NAVE, the first core of architecture students at the Faculty of Architecture, to discuss and disseminate cultural and academic activities, such as debates, exhibitions, idea contests, and study visits (2014-2017). In 2020, she worked as an architect, with the NWLND studio in Ghent (BE) and in the same year, she integrated a studio ATELIERDACOSTA (PT). After that, she worked at an office named Cirurgias Urbanas (PT). In June of 2022, she started a research project at Lab2PT - UMinho, integrating the Future Design of Streets project. Still, in 2022, she attended the course of Architecture and Society of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, which develops a project in the neighbourhood of São Victor / Fontaínhas, in Oporto, a historic area of the city, that has been affected, nowadays by housing speculation. It is still in development through participation. Currently works at Urban Dynamics, an architecture and urbanism office with work to be developed between Portugal and the Netherlands. She's currently holding an urban design project, and also a research "Riders on the Street", which studies the present and future demands of last-mile logistics, and the new design tools, and strategies models to integrate on streets. In March of 2023, she finished a brief "Specialized Training Course in Fundamentals for Scientific Research", integrated into her Minho's fellowship. Catarina advocates for a social, multicultural, and age-inclusive city, a cohesive territory in the city centre, but also the outskirts, and, for new paradigms that bring out community involvement within the design process. Her areas of interest are architecture, urbanism, sociology, and politics, but mostly the understanding of the dynamics of public living spaces - indoor and outdoor-, and their fundamental role in our societies. In August of 2023, she joined an investigation called Riders on the Street, a research that explores the key topics behind last-mile deliveries concerning urban public space. Currently is a PhD candidate at the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Minho, where she is carrying out research into Street transformations, towards a sustainable, social and mobility space: concepts and practices.
