Environmental geochemistry specifically on soil science. Soil clay mineralogy. Soil iron oxides. Rock and mineral weathering – mineral weathering mechanisms using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Degraded Soils - Contamination and rehabilitation. Assessment of soils and sediments contamination by potentially toxic elements in some Portuguese abandoned mine areas and salt marsh areas. Soil/sediment trace elements partitioning, mainly the bioavailable fraction. Assessment of potentially toxic elements uptake and accumulation in plant species (spontaneous and introduced) growing in mine environments and estuary sediments in order to their use in phytoremediation programs. Development in situ remediation low cost techniques for mine wastes and sediments in order to their physico–chemical improvement and stabilization using sustainable combined physico-chemical and biological approaches (low cost amendments and tolerant plants). Landscape geomorphic dynamic: evaluation of the landscape stability/instability by means of the Morphogenesis/Pedogenesis rate. Application to landscape planning.
