João Camões dos Santos completed the Integrated Master¿s in Biological Engineering in 2022 by Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, with a grade at the top of his class (19/20). His master thesis, titled "Using CRISPR/Cas9 to Generate an Isogenic Cell Line from Patient-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells to model Niemann-Pick type C1 Cerebellar Ataxia", was supervised by Dr. Evguenia Bekman and Prof. Tiago Fernandes, and graded 19 out of 20. His main scientific interest areas are genetic engineering; stem cell-based disease modeling; organoids and neuroscience. He has participated in 3 national and international congresses, where he presented posters on the work from his master thesis, and more recently on his work in Angelman Syndrome. For his excellent academic performance, he was awarded the ULisboa Merit Scolarship in 2021. He worked as a teaching assistant at IST for the Transport Phenomena in Biological Systems curricular unit, for three consecutive years, with very positive evaluation from the students (9 out of 9). He applied and was awarded with a research fellowship under the "Stem Cell tool kit for modelling cerebellar dysfunction in Angelman Syndrome" project, funded by the Angelman Syndrome Alliance, and co-supervised by Dr. Simão da Rocha and Dr. Evguenia Bekman. As a research assistant, he is currently working at the Stem Cell Engineering Research Group (SCERG) of the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) on the generation of new induced pluripotent stem cells derived from Angelman syndrome patients and their parents, to be used in the derivation of organoid models of the disease. More recently he was co-authored a Review article titled "Stem cell models of Angelman Syndrome" in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology (Impact factor: 6.081), published in October 2023.
