My academic career has been predicated on the bench-to-bedside-to-bench paradigm in Hematology. Over the last 25 years, I have been engaged in translational research focusing on immunotherapy approaches to improve the outcome of hematological malignancies, with an emphasis on antibody-based therapeutics, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and adoptive T-cell transfer for acute leukemia. I have an extensive track record of leading studies that involve a strong correlative component and collaborating with other investigators both basic and clinical. I joined Nottingham Trent University in September 2016 as the Professor of Cancer Immunotherapy to establish a translational research program, the focus of which is on visualising the state of leukemia-immune system interactions using high-dimensional gene and protein expression data and to use this information to design rational immunotherapy approaches. I have enhanced the creativity of research in the School and the University by introducing state-of-the-art methodologies (targeted gene expression profiling, highly multiplexed spatially resolved digital immunohistochemistry) to address previously unexplored research questions. I have received merit awards from the American Association of Immunologists and the 2019 Vice Chancellor’s Outstanding Researcher Award from NTU, and I have published 209 peer-reviewed papers (H-index=53; i10-index=161; times cited=9,700; total impact factor>1,220), 13 book chapters and >300 conference abstracts. I have secured £4,122,718 of research funding from research charities, government bodies and commercial entities. I currently teach Immunology and Virology at undergraduate and postgraduate level and I provide research mentorship and leadership in the area of cancer immunology and therapeutics.
