Daniela M. Sousa concluded her Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 2012. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Neuro & Skeletal Circuits Group, led by Meriem Lamghari at i3S (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde) and the leader of the Sympathetic Team. In the framework of her Ph.D research, Daniela focused her studies on the pharmacological potential of targeting a specific neuropeptide receptor, as a clinical therapeutic strategy to modulate bone regeneration/repair. These studies led her to join the Neuroscience Group and Bone Research Group at the Garvan institute of Medical Research (Sydney, Australia), where she was able to consolidate her scientific path on the characterization of bone phenotype by means of using murine knockout and bone fracture models. Currently, Daniela has been enrolled in deepening the role of the sympathetic nervous system and the adrenergic signaling pathways in the progression of osteolytic lesions in breast cancer bone metastasis. In the framework of her research, she has developed in vivo mouse bone models to study bone metastasis, fracture and regeneration as well as in vitro 3D models in microfluidic devices for skeletal-non skeletal cells communication studies. Daniela authored 32 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 1 book chapter with a total of 688 citations (h-index 15; Source: SCOPUS). She has established several national and international collaborations that resulted in several joint publications. Currently, Daniela is the principal investigator of a financed project and has been participating as team member in 12 projects (8 national and 4 international). She supervised and co-supervised 1 PhD and several MSc thesis (including 4 ERASMUS students), and undergraduate trainees. She is ad hoc reviewer for several international journals. Daniela has been awarded with an ECTS New Investigator Award in recognition of outstanding work, by the European Calcified Tissue Society (2014). She participate regularly in several public exhibitions, school visits and open days. Daniela was the co-founder and current coordinator of the i3S GreenLab Initiative, which aims to implement green laboratory practices at i3S.
