Pedro Pires has a background training in Applied Chemistry (degree obtained at Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and Electrical Engineering (incomplete; studied electronics, signal processing, telecommunications, computer programming, and system dynamics). Got the PhD in Chemistry (Physical Chemistry, theoretical and experimental thermodynamics) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The professional experience is both academic and non-academic. The main activity has been as assistant professor and researcher at Universidade da Madeira e Centro de Química da Madeira, since December 2001, teaching Physical Chemistry (Chemical Thermodynamics, Quantum Chemistry, Molecular Spectroscopy, Molecular Modelling). Current research interests range from: theoretical physical chemistry, thermodynamics, molecular modelling, nanomaterials, and integration of nanomaterials for biological applications.
