Celso Martins (CM) completed his PhD in Molecular Biosciences in 2020/02/14 at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica. He also holds an MSc in Applied Biology, completed in 2012/07/03, and a BSc in Biology, completed in 2010, both by the Universidade de Aveiro. The researcher works in Natural Sciences with an emphasis on Biological Sciences and Biochemistry, Mycology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and Bioinformatics. Celso Martins published 18 articles in journals (11 as first author); has two sections of books; presented 26 posters and oral communications in international meetings; organized three scientific events; co-supervised one work of course completion of LSc/BSc, three research internships and 3 lab rotations from the Biotechnology for Sustainability MSc course. CM has frequently lectured classes in the Biotechnology for Sustainability MSc program and the Molecular Biosciences PhD program at ITQB NOVA. He is a Junior Lecturer at the University of Lausanne (UNIL, Switzerland), where he teaches General and Analytical Chemistry I and Molecular and Cell Biology courses. He has received five competitive awards and/or honours from national and international entities (ITQB NOVA, SfAM and FEMS). The researcher was competitively granted an Integration into Research Grant Fellowship in 1 project, PhD Student Fellowship in 1 project and a Research Fellowship in 3 projects. Celso Martins received training in 2 Biostatistics and Bioinformatics courses held by the Gulbenkian Training Program in Bioinformatics (GTPB); did one visit (2 months) to the laboratory of Petr Baldrian (Czech Republic) to receive training in Bioinformatics analyses of amplicon sequencing; obtained training in RNAseq data processing and analyses in the laboratory of Cecília Arraiano (Portugal); and was competitively selected to attend the Fungal Pathogen Genomics course at the Wellcome Genome Campus (UK), having received training in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from lead scientists in the field (e.g. David Roos). During his professional activities, CM interacted with over 40 collaborators who share co-authorship of scientific papers. CM has established a multidisciplinary network of international collaborators from fields such as geochemistry (Andrew Hursthouse, UK), metabolomics (Oscar Nuñez, Spain), proteomics (Jenny Renaut, Luxembourg), fungal biology and virulence (Gustavo Goldman, Brazil), bioinformatics (Petr Baldrian, Czech Republic), biotechnology (Cristina Silva Pereira, Portugal). On-going works involving his network have been largely influenced by his vision and strategy to handle scientific questions: CM currently does research at the Vjestica lab at UNIL (Switzerland), where he is exploring sexual differentiation and zygotic cell fate in fungi using a combination of high-throughput sequencing, genetics and live-microscopy. His vision aims at untangling the missing links between the stress caused by environmental pollution and increased pathogenicity in fungi at the molecular level. Overall, CM wants to understand how the stress associated with sexual differentiation in fungi leads to genomic alterations that may have a role in the rise of pathogenicity in fungi and their reported acquisition of broad host range infection capacity (cross-kingdom pathogenicity). CM relies on his multidisciplinary training, which covers areas such as Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology and Evolution and Bioinformatics, to explore the topics of his interest, both at the research and teaching levels.

Activity description Institution / Organization
2014/11 - 2015/03 Scientific consultant in the book "Messi - o futebolista que joga no futuro: como a natureza humana pode explicar o futebol". The book fuses scientific rigor with the path of existentialism. The author (Ricardo Serrado) exposes in a simple and appealing way a new look at human development, carefully combining Social Sciences with Biological Sciences, resulting in an analytical analysis of the origin of Lionel Messi's genius. My role in this publication was that of reviewer and scientific consultant for the area of Biological Sciences.
