Research in my group focusses on building genomic resources to infer evolutionary processes of diversification and disentangling processes that drive the dynamics of adaptation. Until recently, the lack of a reference genome has hindered investigations of the Alpine whitefish, an intriguing study system to understand the forces generating biodiversity as well as the threats to losing it. To overcome this limitation, we established an Alpine whitefish reference genome. Now, we are well positioned to disentangle phylogenetic relationships amongst the species within the radiation and to investigate genes underlying key ecological differences between species. Further we use historical data collections to study the dynamics of genomic change more directly over time and to uncover the impact of anthropogenic ecosystem changes on the genomic composition of the Alpine whitefish assemblage. To overcome the limitations of correlative evidence typical of natural systems, my team additionally implements experimental evolution in chemostats, to disentangle which ecological and evolutionary factors influence rapid genomic change. We studied the co-evolution of a green algal host and its virus over about 100 generations. We show that molecular evolution during species interactions is shaped by both eco-evolutionary feedback dynamics and interspecific differences in how genetic diversity is generated and maintained. Our research demonstrates the value of genomic resources and the ability to infer the role of past evolutionary processes on contemporary diversity and that temporally resolved genomic data provides valuable information on the continuous and dynamic interacting of past ecological and evolutionary processes.
