I present the general guidelines and motivation of my activity centered on four points: Teaching, Research, Scientific Dissemination and Promotion of Experimental Teaching of Science and Management Activities. Teaching - Teaching activity focused on the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering and involved the responsibility of several disciplines, especially in the areas of Science and Technology of Metallic Materials, Composite Materials and Mechanical Properties of Materials. In the subjects taught, I implemented, within the scope of practical and laboratory classes, Laboratory Projects of an investigative nature that require the student to have an active attitude of defining objectives, programming activities, and solving problems. The development of critical thinking, of a research attitude on life is a key point on student’s preparation for the challenges of professional life. I also implemented seminar classes to be presented by students, enhancing the learning of communication skills in Portuguese and English, with scientific and technological rigor, essential for insertion and creating value in the job market. Research - After being appointed Assistant Professor at IST in 1993, I sought to develop my scientific activity with autonomy and independence and in collaboration with peers. In this way, I created, at ICEMS, an Interfaces and Modeling research group that I coordinated until the end of that Center in 2015. In 2013 I actively participated in the creation of CeFEMA and in the creation of the NanoMatter group that I coordinate. The group's focus is the development and characterization of volumetric composite materials, which explore multiple microstructural scales, designed for functional and structural applications in extreme environments. The production of nanoparticles, complex powders and colloidal suspensions is a natural upstream interest. It is an essential part of my Group Coordination strategy to promote the autonomy of integrated members by creating a stimulating environment for their development. Knowledge Transfer - The work developed of promoting scientific and technological literacy and experimental teaching of science using scientific methodology is particularly important. Following the challenge launched to the Scientific Community and Society in general by the Ciência Viva Program in 1995, I took the decision to commit myself to developing two scientific dissemination and promotion of Experimental Science Teaching projects: Exploring Materials, started in 1996, which aims to promote Materials Science and Engineering among secondary school teachers and students and the general public. Explora os Materials was held at IST, alongside Physics Week, an absolute pioneer of a new way of promoting IST among the school community and the general public. Let's Play with Materials, launched in 1997, aims to develop knowledge and skills specific to the process of producing scientific knowledge based on experimental Materials Science and Technology platforms in the 1st cycle of Basic Education. It also aims to promote scientific literacy and citizenship among its target audience. Also noteworthy is the consultancy work carried out in the area of metallic materials. Management activities - University Management activities are an opportunity to actively contribute to creating better conditions for Research and Teaching, knowing how to resolve conflicts, overcome difficulties and join forces that I have always embraced with enthusiasm. The trust placed in me by the School Bodies and peers has led me to carry out various University Management tasks, of appointment or election, in Research Units, Academic Departments and Course Coordination, of which the Co-Coordination of IST Material Engineering Master Course (2021-), the Vice-presidency of the ICEMS (2010-2015)and CeFEMA (2015 - present) and the preparation of the recently approved LaPMET Associate laboratory application (2021).
