Paulo Rui Fernandes graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon in 1989, and obtained the M.Sc. degree in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree in 1998 in the same institution. In 2012 obtained the Habilitation (Agregação) in Mechanical Engineering. In 1990 he did a research internship in the computer graphics institute FHG-AGD in Darmstad, Germany and later in 1998 he did a post-doc in Biomechanics at the Pennsylvania State University, USA. Paulo Fernandes is an Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the Instituto Superior Técnico. He teaches and coordinates several courses of the Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Programs, both at undergraduate and graduate level. In the Biomedical Engineering Program, he teaches Computational Mechanics and Tissue Biomechanics since this program is offered at IST, and, recently, he proposed a new course on Mechanobiology. He supervised a high number of PhD theses and MSc students. He is a senior researcher in the IDMEC, Institute of Mechanical Engineering and an integrated member of LAETA, Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transports and Aeronautics. In 1998, he was awarded with the IBM Scientific Prize for the work Simulação do Processo de Adaptação do Osso Trabecular (Simulation of the Trabecular Bone Adaptation), a prize promoted by IBM-Portugal. His main area of research is Biomechanics, namely Computational Biomechanics, Bone Mechanics, Implant Design and Tissue Engineering. He was member of the European Society of Biomechanics Council from 2012 to 2016 and President of the Portuguese Society of Biomechanics from 2013 to 2017. He coordinated and/or participated in several national and international projects. Paulo Fernandes is the director of the Tissue Biomechanics Laboratory in IST. Paulo Fernandes is author or co-author of several publications with an H-index of 24 in SCOPUS (in May 2022). He is the current coordinator of the Master on Mechanical Engineering, member of the Executive Board of the Mechanical Engineering Department as vice-president for the academic subjects.
