D Ferreira is a cancer researcher and member of the Portuguese Society of Human Genetics (Sociedade Portuguesa de Genética Humana - SPGH), with a keen interest in the application of new technologies to healthcare and biological sciences and in multidisciplinary R&D projects. Throughout his career, D Ferreira has participated in 11 research projects and counts 2+ years of international experience. After a brief stint in the neurosciences field, he has focused his efforts in the study of several cancers, with a particular focus in cancers of the digestive system. D Ferreira has a degree in Biochemistry by the University of Porto and a master degree in Biology, where he has studied multiple aspects of Hodgkin´s lymphoma. D Ferreira concluded recently a PhD degree in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology Applied to Health Sciences (BiotechHealth). Throughout his PhD studies, D Ferreira, specialized in biotechnology, materials science and tissue engineering, with a particular focus in the development of organ-on-a-chip platforms, a work that generated several first-author publications, as well as a patent. In 2016, D Ferreira concluded successfully a post-graduation in Intelectual Property by the World Intelectual Property Organization (WIPO). D Ferreira has published 11 peer reviewed articles in international journals, as well as 4 abstracts in conference proceedings, a book chapter and a patent on a microfabrication technique, for complex multilayered organ-on-a-chip devices with integrated microactuators. D Ferreira has an h-index of 10, having been cited 209 times (source: Scopus - Author ID 55927177600) and has presented his work multiple times in international and national conferences through poster and oral presentations. D Ferreira currently holds a post-doc researcher position at i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde da Universidade do Porto, Associação where he is the principal investigator of 2 research projects, having secured over 80.000 euros of funding, in his first year as a post-doc. Since then he has gained a further 136.000 euros divided by 3 complementary projects which will fund his research until the end of 2026. D Ferreira was distinguished at the 12th International Meeting of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cellular Therapy with a best oral communication award and also with the International 3Rs prize awarded by the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs, UK). Recently we won the 2023 European Society of Human Genetics Fellowship of Excellence and the Best Clinical Research Award at the 27th Annual SPGH conference. His patented technology was also an honorable mention at the 2022 Lush Prize awards (finalist for the Science Category) and top 3 finalist at the 2022 Altice International Innovation Awards. In 2023 he was an honorable mention for the Alfredo da Silva Awards in the Sustainability in Health Category, His awards also include a prestigious short-term EMBO fellowship. International recognition has garnered D Ferreira several invitations to teach at Advanced Course Units in several Portuguese Universities, as well as speaker invitations at international meetings and an invitation to join the scientific commitee for the PhDay Conference at i3S and was a member of the organizing committee of the 5th International Gastric Cancer Linkage Consortium (IGCLC) meeting held in June 2024, Porto, Portugal. International recognition has earned D Ferreira an invitation to participate in the preparation and submission of a COST Action on Advanced Microfluidics for Applied Diagnostics in 2022 and integrated a Twinning- Bottom Up application in 2023. D Ferreira is an invited reviewer for the journals, Bioprinting, Organoids and Cancers. D Ferreira has supported and supervised several traineeship and master students. D Ferreira is a member of the team that created and manages the first Portuguese 3Rs Knowledge Center and i3S' Startup Hub.
