I am currently a Researcher at Okeanos, University of the Azores, studying deep-water elasmobranchs. I have recently (October 2021) finished my Postdoc at the University of Agder, Norway, in fish Population Genomics (ddRADseq), and this gave me the opportunity to develop my molecular skills and access to cutting edge HTS platforms. During my PhD (completed in 2018) at the University of the Azores, I used different molecular markers (microsatellites and mtDNA) to analyse the population genetic structure of some poorly studied deep-sea fish and sharks. The study found the existence on a major genetic barrier between the Atlantic and the deep Mediterranean Sea where populations got isolated likely during the last glaciation. My PhD was done in collaboration with the Havforskningsinstituttet, Norway where I spent about 19 months (in several stays), doing laboratory work. I also collaborated with the Institut de Ciències del Mar, Barcelona, where I did an internship of 3 weeks, and several other stays to collect samples. During my PhD I have collaborated with several deep-sea researchers in UK, France, Italy, Portugal, Australia, Japan, Greece to mention a few. Since 2007 I have been connected to the Demersais team at the Azores, where I have acquired a vast experience working with demersal and deep-sea species through the participation on about 35 research cruises during the past 15 years, some of which as the leading scientist onboard. During these demersal surveys I have acquired a vast experience in taxonomy (especially for deep-water sharks), sampling and fish biology. Being the leading scientist on board also help to develop my leadership, organizational, communication and conflict management skills. After my PhD I have dedicated my post-doc path partial to deep-sea teleost and chondrichthyans taxonomy with the help of DNA barcoding. During this work I have been resolving taxonomic issues encountered during the demersal cruises, working in two cryptic shark species, and finding new records for the region. I also have been collaborating with DiscardLess project with the writing of a field identification manual for deep-water sharks and developing an identification key which was published in 2020. Despite being a recent post-doc, I have been successfully attracting funding for my research, with 2 small projects (IBAC and TANDEM (eDNA)) approved in 2 separated competitive calls of Assemble+ Transnational Access, which used expensive cutting edge metabarcoding HTS technology. I am co-PI of a national project (SOS TubaProf funded by MAR2020) which aims to study the bycatch of deep-water sharks using traditional and innovative tools (eDNA) and has a strong component of outreach and ocean literacy targeting fishers. Furthermore, I got funding from the Systematic Research Fund 2020 to resolve elasmobranch taxonomic issues, and by the Save Our Seas Foundation which funded my project "Sustainable science in the deep blue sea" (PI, Small Grant 2021) about deep-water sharks and eDNA. My research fields are Marine Biology, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biodiversity Conservation, Fisheries, which specifically includes the fields of Taxonomy, Biogeography, Population genetics/genomics, (Meta)barcoding, Deep-sea Ecology. I have a total of 83 publications: 18 research articles (6 as first author) published in peer-reviewed journals and plus 2 under revision (1 as first author); 1 book and 1 book chapter; 2 conference abstracts; 9 conference posters; 20 datasets; 30 reports and 2 thesis. Further have 5 manuscripts in preparation presenting my most recent findings, two of which with already accepted abstracts. I have received 10 awards/honours, 2 for best poster and best oral presentation at meetings. I have been involved in the organisation of the European meeting of the EMODnet Biology, 3 project meetings and 5 workshops for fishers in the Azores, and in 20 national and international research projects, 6 of which as PI or co-PI.

  1. Como manusear um tubarão a bordo / How to handle a shark onboard - Good handling practices poster for fishers. This poster aims to promote the best handling practices for deep-water sharks onboard of fishing vessels. Knowing how to handle a shark when it comes onboard and safely return it to the sea, will improve sharks post-release survival and will promote fishers onboard safety. The A3 poster size is made of splash proof material to be used on deck.. 2020. Scientific expedition

Activity description Institution / Organization
2007/04 - Current Demersal surveys - Since 2007 I have participated in more than 35 research cruises during the past 16 years, some of which as the leading scientist onboard. During these longline demersal surveys I have acquired a vast experience in taxonomy (especially for deep-water sharks), sampling and fish biology. Work onboard consist in collection of fishing effort, biological sampling, tagging, collection of genetic material, water for eDNA, CTD, deep-sea imaging. IMAR - Instituto do Mar, Portugal
2022/05 - 2023/06 Fishing experiments on commercial fishing boat - during the SOSTubaProf project we conducted fishing experiments on gear selectivity for deep-water sharks to test gear catchability both on shark bycatch and target bonyfish species. During the experiments, it was also tested the survival of deep-water sharks using electronic tagging, biological sampling, collection of genetic material and water for eDNA. IMAR - Instituto do Mar, Portugal
2012 - 2012 CoralFISH - Fishing experiments using longlines in Ionic Sea, Greece. My participation consisted in the collection of genetic material of different species of dee-sea fishes to use in my PhD project. HCMR Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Greece
2011 - 2012 DOSMARES - Deep-sea fishing expedition using trawling in Blanes Canyon, Spain, Mediterranean. My participation consisted in the identification of deep-water shaks and collection of genetic material for my PhD project. Participation in 3 legs of the expedition. Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Spain
