Artur Filipe Rodrigues holds a PhD in Nanoscience (specialisation in Pharmacy) from the University of Manchester (UK) and an MSc in Molecular Biotechnology from the University of Aveiro (Portugal). He has 10+ years of experience in Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, focusing on the development and preclinical evaluation of nanomaterials for advanced drug delivery systems and biointerfaces. Filipe aspires to become a leader in the development of advanced therapies for Regenerative Medicine, bringing novel treatments to improve patients' welfare. Throughout his career, he acquired extensive experience in the development of non-pyrogenic materials in compliance with GLP guidelines, leading to their application in the first-in-human clinical trial involving controlled exposure to graphene by inhalation (NCT03659864, DOI: 10.1038/s41565-023-01572-3). He also contributed to this study by generating preclinical evidence on the pharmacology and toxicology of graphene oxide dispersions. Filipe joined the Centre for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CiBB) of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in 2019, where he has developed nanoformulations for the delivery of biologics (enzymes, mRNA) for gene editing in the brain and skin. He later secured a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Widening Fellowship (2020-2022) to formulate graphene-based nanocomposites for wireless electrical stimulation of neural cells using light. During this period, Filipe filed a patent application (WO2023/037311 A1) after discovering a polymeric nanoformulation that selectively delivers mRNA to fibroblasts. This technology has helped CiBB attracting EUR 1.5M in follow-up funding through EIC Pathfinder Open projects Piezo4Spine and REGENERAR. Passionate about bringing therapeutic innovation to patients, Filipe served digital health start-up iLoF (Portugal/UK) as Biochemistry Lead, leveraging his technical skills to explore strategic opportunities and partnerships in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. He returned to CiBB in 2023 to bridge scientific discoveries with business strategy. Since 2019, he has secured EUR 200k in competitive funding (including 2 innovation awards) and contributed to 10+ R&D grant proposals in national and international calls. Filipe has been engaged with innovation and knowledge dissemination through the supervision of 2 MSc theses and 4 laboratory rotations, as well as the organisation of 3 scientific events. He has published 22 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (13 in the last 5 years) and 1 book chapter, which have accumulated 1000+ citations (h-index = 16). Filipe has a track-record of cross-functional collaborations with 100+ scientists (15 different nationalities) and stakeholders in 8 countries (PT, ES, FR, DE, IT, SE, UK, USA). He has delivered 30+ scientific communications to various audiences, including invited lectures and seminars, outreach activities, and 12 international conferences, where he won 2 awards. His efforts in the scientific community were recognised with his nominations in 2023 as an Emerging Investigator and as an Outstanding Reviewer for RSC journals Nanoscale and Biomaterials Science, respectively.
