Isabel Martins Gil obtained a Dr. rer. nat. in Geosciences in 2006/06 at Universität Bremen, a DEA in Environnements et Paleoenvironnements Côtiers et Océaniques in 2001 by Université de Bordeaux, a Maîtrise in Geography in 2000 by Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, a Licence in Geography in 1999 and a Bachelor (1st cycle) in Geography in 1998 at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
