I obtained my PhD degree in Biology in 2016 by Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia), during which I worked on the identification and characterization of carbohydrate uptake systems and in the regulation mechanisms of proteins involved in sugar utilization, using the model microorganism Bacillus subtilis. During this period, I became an expert in Molecular Biology and Genetics of Gram-positive bacteria and co-supervised multiple graduate and undergraduate students. The work performed during my MSc and PhD resulted in the publication of three peer-reviewed papers in international journals, in all of which I was first author. Additionally, I was directly responsible for teaching Molecular Biology classes and also supported Gene Expression Regulation classes at FCT-NOVA. During my PhD, and before that, I was part of the organizing committee of scientific meetings. I am currently a Postdoctoral researcher at ITQB-NOVA, in Mariana G. Pinho’s lab, working on the mechanisms controlling the cell cycle and division of the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, on cell division protein-protein interactions and on antibiotic resistance. During this time I acquired extensive experience in fluorescence microscopy techniques (widefield, super-resolution SIM, FLIM-FRET) and chromatography (UHPLC), and recently co-authored a research article published in Nature Communications. I also co-supervised one MSc in Applied Microbiology dissertation. During my time at ITQB-NOVA, in addition to my research activities, I accumulated the role of Lab Manager and was involved in several outreach activities promoting Science to the general public, with a special focus on younger students.
