Sandra Louzada Gomes Pereira (Sandra Louzada) completed the degree (BSc) in Biology and Geology (Education) in 2004 and the PhD in Molecular, Comparative and Technological Genetics in 2013 at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). Worked as Senior Research Assistant at the Cytogenetics Core Facility in Wellcome Sanger Institute (Cambridge, UK), where she collaborated with varied research groups resulting in high standard publications. Presently is a Junior Researcher (with a CEEC contract) at the CytoGenomics Lab, UTAD, and is an integrated member of Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI). Specialized in molecular cytogenetics, the study of chromosomes, their structure and evolution, using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Previous research focused on karyotype restructuring during species evolution and cancer progression, focusing in the role of satellite DNA sequences in shaping the genomes landscape; and using FISH as a validation tool, in particular multicolour fiber-FISH (on single-molecule DNA fibers prepared by molecular combing) to visualise, resolve and validate complex genomic structural variants in human populations. Is currently dedicated to the study of Robertsonian translocations using long-read sequencing technologies, and the characterisation of the satellite DNA sequences (centromeric and pericentromeric) and the functional significance of non-coding satellite RNAs using genomic and cellular biology methodologies .
